California’s Prop 8

posted by on October 31 at 9:30 AM

Towleroad has a massive rundown on all the latest news out of California. Go read it. Haven’t donated to No on Prop 8? Donate now. Already donated? Donate again. Samuel Jackson provided the voice-over for the latest No on Prop 8 ad…

And Stephen Colbert goes after Apple Computer for donating to the No on Prop 8 campaign…

Finally, Slog’s new favorite bloggers—a pair of little old ladies—offer their take on Prop 8 today

So several of you have emailed me about something happening in California. Now, a lot of crazy stuff goes on in that state and so I may be getting this a little mixed up. Evidently they are wanting to pass a constitutional amendment to make only marriages between a man and a woman valid in California. Talk about an ignorant pot calling a gay kettle black. Somebody really should check the latest divorce rates because clearly many marriages everywhere are not valid.

Now I am an old broad. We didn’t talk about this stuff. I really don’t know why gay people want to get married. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Just ask Harold. But I guess if one consenting adult wants to declare their love for another, why would anyone have an issue? I do know one gay couple. Margaret’s nephew and his friend have been together for several years. They are a lovely couple and make me laugh and feel special every time I see them. A couple of years ago Texas passed one of these constitutional amendments. The place where Harold and I go to vote is actually an elementary school in the neighborhood. On that particular election day I was appalled to see all the signs that said “Marriage Should Be Between a Man and Woman Only”. As Harold drove us into the parking lot to vote, I looked out the window at those signs and realized that many parents had driven their kids to school that morning driving past those very signs. I wonder if any of them had the same reaction I did—those signs reminded me of the little signs we used to have back in the day that said “Whites Only”. Think about it.

I love that woman. I can't believe she's real.

When Sarah Palin talks about "straight talk", this is how she wants people to think she talks. If she actually did, I might have some respect for her.

@1 - I can't believe she's real, either; I hope the blog is genuine, but something about it doesn't ring true for me.

After bugging Dan in comments and an email he finally posts a story related to Apple's support! Gee, it only took a segment on basic cable for him to find out about it.

Phone banking on Monday.

Does anyone have a link to the Stephen Colbert video that's viewable in Canada? Comedy Central videos won't play up here.

I will bet dollars to donuts that this woman is not real. Which sucks because as soon as she is exposed as a hip 30 something and a Democrat the vanguards of truth and justice on the AM dial and on faux will be all over it.

Are amendments and propositions like this popping up in every state this election? We've got the same exact thing here in Florida, except it's called Amendment 2. Supporters of this amendment call it "The Marriage Protection Amendment", and say that it's to stop gays from getting married. Ironically, we've already got 4 laws on the books that ban gay marriage anyway, so this "anti-gay" amendment will only screw straight people who are in domestic partnerships, civil unions, or common-law marriages! A lot of people in these relationships are elderly couples whose previous husband/wife passed away. If they remarry, they'll lose the social security benefits and survivor benefits they got when their spouse died. People can be pretty ignorant sometimes!

I think that Samuel-narrated ad is the first one I've seen that actually showed families with same-sex parents with their kids. So far, they've all been straight people mimicking the pain of not being able to get married. No on 8 is right for reclaiming kids (finally).

Marriage should ONLY be between a man and a woman. If we weaken the definition of marriage we weaken society. Vote YES on prop 8!
