We've got the same exact thing here in Florida, except it's called Amendment 2. Supporters of this amendment call it "The Marriage Protection Amendment", and say that it's to stop gays from getting married. Ironically, we've already got 4 laws on the books that ban gay marriage anyway, so this "anti-gay" amendment will only screw straight people who are in domestic partnerships, civil unions, or common-law marriages! A lot of people in these relationships are elderly couples whose previous husband/wife passed away. If they remarry, they'll lose the social security benefits and survivor benefits they got when their spouse died. People can be pretty ignorant sometimes!
