Watching the State of the Union: Calm, Cool, Collected

posted by on January 28 at 19:30 PM

I can’t watch Barack Obama give a speech before a big crowd without stressing out the whole time. Watching Obama speaking live before a big crowd, like I said on Sunday, is extremely unpleasant. I find myself muttering, “Please don’t get shot, please don’t get shot, please don’t get shot,” the entire time. I’m almost unbearably tense.

Oddly enough, I have the opposite reaction when I watch George W. Bush give speech. I’m not the least bit tense. Not at all.

Weird, huh?

UPDATE: Whoa, whoa, whoa: Some folks in the comments thread have suggested that I suggested that I would be pleased if President Bush got shot. Not true. I never went there—nor would I, as I don’t want any harm to come to the George W. Bush. I also learnt my lesson about making kill-the-president cracks way, way back in 1992. (On the radio I said that teh gays would kill Bill Clinton if he backed out of his pledge to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military—meaning we would be so frustrated we would want to kill him, not actually kill him—and subsequently spent four hours explaining myself to a Secret Service. Bill did, of course, and we didn’t.) All I was said in the above post was that I am tense when I watch Obama speak, and suddenly quite the opposite — calm, cool, collected—when I watch Bush speak. I never suggested that I longed for the president to meet a bad end before (or after) the end of his term.

I am, of course, looking forward to the end of his term, like all sane people everywhere, but I don’t wish Bush harm and I certainly don’t want to see Dick Cheney installed—officially, at least—in the Oval Office before January 20, 2009. Cheney already has the powers of the presidency—he doesn’t need the powers of incumbency too.

And this state of calm is, for me, real progress. For seven years of his presidency my blood boiled when I watched Bush speak. Now with the light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter with each passing day, I can watch Bush speak without audibly grinding my teeth.

I’m sorry some people took this post the wrong way. They need to look inside their own hearts.

Sorry, Dan. I'm calling him home.

You're okay with Cheney being pres?

Funny, whenever I hear Bush's voice I cringe. Can't stand it or the accent or pronunciation or anything. I have to change the channel.

Bush is Ok. Only the sixth level of Hell right now. Not that that's anybody's idea of a picnic in the park, but really not so bad. The lower levels get positively gruesome.

If you ever find yourself down there at the very bottom level, trust me, while you're shitting yourself, there's a door at the end of a short corridor slightly behind you and to your left. Go through the door. Anytime, day or night, I'll be there. It's sorta my job.

This is the kind of post that will get your ass on a no-fly list, if not waterboarded.

@8

Yeah Dan, sweet jeebus, and I thought I was the one who should be nervous about the stuff I post... but here you've thrown all caution to the wind in a way I can only stand back and admire with awe.

Really? You want the one thing to happen to George Bush that would force everyone to think kindly of him and recast his presidency in positive terms?

Dead politicians are martyrs. I don't want Bush's murder to trigger a new Cheney-led War on Everyone, and I don't want Obama's murder to supplant JFK's ghost as the ideal no breathing politician can ever achieve.

Also, if everyone's worrying about something it's more likely to happen, but that's a different issue.

After that post, I wouldn't be surprised if we all wake to a terror level of orange. Do the words "extraordinary rendition" mean anything to you?

I always wondered why nobody at least attempted to off Bush. I mean, there are enough people in the world who really hate him, and are willing to martry themselves, that you'd think someone would at least have tried it.

That being said, I agree with @10. Who wants W to be remembered as anything other than the worst president ever? Not me, that's for sure.

I have to confess to not watching. I tried, really I did, but I was eating dinner at the time and could feel the food starting to creep up my esophagus at the sound of Bush's voice. I had to turn to Cash Cab on the Discovery Channel.

I suppose I'll get the condensed version on NPR tomorrow morning during my long commute through the snow.

@12, and 14: Yes, there are nut jobs who have tried. No, the prospect of President Cheney doesn't sway the kind of person who would seriously consider assassinating Bush. Fortunately the Secret Service are good at what they do, God bless them. My fervent hope is that they can keep Bush safe for the rest of his natural life. After all, he needs to be alive to stand trial.

You mean Bush didn't announce he was firing Cheney and then resigning?

Darn.

I did manage to catch Obama's response. In fact, after I avoided the GWB speech, I noticed everyone but Faux was talking about Obama and the Dems, but nobody really bothered talking about GWB's latest batch of lies.

GWB is so over. 356 and a wake up.

See, this is the inherent logic in the idea of an Obama/Hillary ticket. The mad white redneck with the sniper rifle won't shoot the black man if a woman is on deck, or vice versa.

Good idea Hernandez, but I doubt it will happen. The mudslinging between the Obama and Clinton camps jumped the shark at some point a while back and I don't think a reconciliation will happen any time soon. This is the Democrats' election to lose, but whoever prophesied that we will find a way to do so may have had something like this in mind. Go to the KFC parody thread and witness the petty bickering among Sloggers and you'll see what I mean.

Cheney or not. The statute of limitations for the 20-year-presidential death jinx has not expired. W was elected in a year divisible by 20 - 2000 was that year.

Yes - the quibblers will say it was broken by Reagan - elected in 1980 (divisible by 20), shot in 1981, survived. Had he not been within three miles of GWU Hospital he almost certainly would have exsanguinated (sorry Josh!). So in fact he is/was a victim of the 20-year-jinx. Thanks, Jodie.

None of this is to mean whatever you think it should mean, but Christ the man has already nearly strangled on a pretzel. Washed down with Grey Goose? Who knows? Later at night, Martha says well-prepared food for thought is a good thing. Carry on.

I think all of this talk is in poor taste, even if you're talking about your worry for Obama. The more it is discussed the more wackos think about the idea, the more someone feels that it must be done.

Dan, I think you need to drop the subject.

Posted by Timothy | January 29, 2008 7:29 AM
23

I never raised the subject. All I said was that I was tense when I watch Obama speak, and the opposite -- calm -- when I watch Bush speak. I never suggested that I longed for the president to meet a bad end. I'm merely looking forward to the end of his term, and I certainly don't want to see Cheney installed -- officially -- in the Oval Office.

This is progress. For seven years my blood boiled when I watched Bush speak. Now, not so much. I'm sorry some people took this post the wrong way. They need to look inside their own hearts.

What you said, Dan, is that you'd be perfectly fine with Bush getting shot in the face, and that it was on your mind during the speech.

WTF is wrong with you crazy motherfuckers? Did they not teach you to read in school? Dan said absolutely nothing about Bush. Crimeny, people, at least read the post before you shoot your mouth off.

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | January 29, 2008 9:03 AM

No one would shoot either Chenney or Bush. To quote West Wing, "they only shoot at you when you're doing something right."

Posted by monkey | January 29, 2008 9:44 AM

I totally agree w/ @25, get a grip. The biggest threat to Obama is closeted bigots. I think Hillary has woman-haters and Clinton-haters, and that hopefully outnumbers bigots. But (i) I'm nervous when I see the number of white Dems supporting Obama that maybe it doesn't) and (ii) I think bigots are more likely to lie about what they'll do in the booth skewing the polling numbers.

I'm with Dan in hoping that Bush can finish this out wothout incident and turn over power democratically. I really wonder that cheney and turd bottom amassed all this power in the executive just to turn it over to Hilary or Obama.

Dan...

I'm not objecting to the specifics in this post, as much as your voicing your concerns here and in the previous posting about Obama being shot.

I think the more that talk is discussed, the more inevitable it seems. And, like it or not, you have a loud megaphone. I don't want some crazy to hear all this talk of assassination and think "hey, I should do that."

I recognize the fear, but do we really need to verbalize it?

"They need to look inside their own hearts."

Okay, done and done. I wouldn't care if someone took out Bush. He deserves it more than most people put to death legally in this country. Next question.

Dan I'd recommend the movie "Death of a President"

It's set as a documentary about it. Purely fictional, and I'm not advocating it, but it was very interesting

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0853096/

"Years after the assassination of President George W. Bush in Chicago, an investigative documentary examines that as-yet-unsolved crime."

As superstitious as you are personally, Dan, would you please do some kind of counter-jinx to this whole topic. And shut up about it.
