The Morning News

posted by on August 3 at 7:00 AM

USA? USA? An emotional exchange between Mitt Romeny and a waitress over world health.

Boos for Clinton: At YearlyKos.

More criticism for Obama: From Clinton.

Hypocritical? John Edwards on Rupert Murdoch.

Dodd vs. O’Reilly: The blog debate continues.

Bridge collapse: Eight to 30 still unaccounted for.

Structurally deficient: Maybe a quarter of the nation’s bridges?

And in this state: More than 300 structurally deficient bridges.

Here’s the Romney video:

For all I know, Romney was lying through his teeth, but wow, I thought he knocked that out of the park.

I'm no fan of Romney, or really any on-the-stump politician, but what did this woman want Romney to say? I agree with MHD, he gave a pretty decent answer, but it seems she was looking for him to tell her he'd cover all her healthcare costs tomorrow.

She said it right at the beginning; "what are you going to do for ME?". She's not interested in the state of health care in the US. And when Romney talked about healthcare instead of about HER, she was disappointed.

Bill O'Reilly: "This is the worst stuff on the Internet, you're not going to see anything worse than this."

Does anyone take this joker seriously?

This could be one of those little moments that propels this guy into prominence in the Republican campaign. Even the oh-he-is-so-articulate Obama doesn't handle these types situations very well. He kept the party line saying what Repubs want to hear, made a vague promise, brought up something he did in the past (in a very democratic state)and moved on without blinking.

This is also why you don't base your vote on who is the most articulate, or has the nicest hair, or who has the best poise under pressure while on the streets.

You base your vote the best man/woman for the job.

We're all going to die. (On structurally deficient bridges.)

Hmm for all of you folks I have a song for Romney... "They call him Flipper Flipper!" He will change his position in a week or so. Don't worry about it.

And the bridges; yeah it is call a national infrastructure that has been neglected for at least a generation. So it is going to keep happening so start dealing with it and if you must travel on a bridge..well just drive like a bat out of hell.

I am sure Tim Eyman has other plans to make sure we will never have any money to fix anything. So when the 520 gives out during rush hour blame the anti-tax crowd. "Taxes are the price we pay for civil society" Oliver Wendell Holmes (a conservative jurist btw)

"Structurally deficient" does not mean "at risk of falling down".

The viaduct is in way, way worse shape than any of Washington's hundreds of SD bridges.

Nice that you all think Romney handled that so well--personally, I think he got his ass handed to him, and deservedly so. Health care in this country is a mutherfucking nightmare, and that waitress was absolutely spot-on in articulating her frustrations.

The more basic question is why these bridges are only lasting 40 years? The same civil engineers that design these puppies are crying that they need to be upgraded (takes engineering) or replaced (even more engineering) but never question those that did the original work. Who designed the original Narrows bridge?

The Brooklyn bridge was built in 1883. Are the bridges that Robert Moses built in the first part of last century falling apart or down?

The 520 replacement should probably not be a floating bridge because they just don't last. If we're going to build new bridges they should be built to last.

Did we see the same video? Romney belly flopped hard, and I read the article where the author seemed to agree. He did actually respond to a question from an unvetted piss-on (that waitress should be commended for being so tenacious), so if that’s all it takes to win the Republican nomination then he’s got a better than average shot.

However, he was still unable to relate to this woman on her level. This woman works hard and her husband works two jobs and they still can’t afford health care for themselves and their kids. Telling her that the piranhas in the insurance industry are going to take care of her is not helping – she’s already got that. He’s a smooth talker, but you can tell that he’ll say whatever it takes about the terrorists, the Mexicans, the gays, Hillary Clinton or whoever to get the job done. And she was talking about US healthcare in the context of helping us here at home when Romney was going on about foreign aid, a noble goal but we’ve obviously got some work to do here since we have some of the lowest ranked quality of health care in the developed world.

Here’s a more apt headline:

Noted Compulsive Liar and Dog Torturer tells Waitress to Drop Dead.

My favorite bit was when the waitress pointed out that he had cost her an hour in tips.

And no one is even talking about dental.

@ Original Andrew, if anyone told anyone to drop dead it was Bush when HE BLAMED THE DEMOCRATS FOR THE BRIDGE COLLAPSING in Minneapolis.

Only a Republican can use death as a way of pushing their political views.

@14

That, and, you know, they don't care about what we want. Our agenda is not their agenda. They only care about our vote. Which they know they (could) get, seeing how more than half of our country thinks the way they do.

Sigh..if only the waitress had said, "Oh yes, your Massachusetts plan? The one that FORCES people to buy insurance and if they don't FINES them? Yes, that's REALLY helping the poor."

LYING SACK OF SHIT. I hope this guy doesn't get the nomination because I can't stand hearing his bullshit for much longer.

that video does make Mitt look good. that waitress was super annoying. she came off as selfish, attacking, an uninterested in an actual dialog. when she goes on to talk about Mitt in his fancy clothes and fancy car it almost seems like a characture. her hostility didn't make me feel for her.

what are you going to do for me??? FOR MEE???!!?!?!!!

Cheer up Dianna,

When Romney starts shooting off his cake hole about how he started socialized medicine in the Communist state of Taxachusetts, the right-wingers will squirt blood from their eyeballs and he'll be outta here faster than a fart in a hurricane.

infrequent @ 21,

It's not as clear in the video, but in the article she's clearly referring to the fact that Romney began to give a stump speech about medical aid to foreign countries, which upset her 'cause can't even get it together here in the US since our shiz is so broke.

Original Andrew:

What's bothering me is that no Democratic candidates have called him on his bullshit. I realize they're primarily fighting each other for the Democratic nomination, but if he keeps repeating this "I got Massachusetts health care [without "socializing" medicine)" line without someone pointing out what really happened, people will start to believe it. Once they believe him, it's too late.

I will gouge out my eyes if he's elected. Or move to Canada.

#3: Unfortunately, a lot of people take O'Reilly seriously. Dodd had a pretty good showing - he remained calm and collected, cited the study regarding O'Reilly's rhetoric, and (correctly) redefined the issue that O'Reilly was on about. Good for Dodd.

I was hoping that Dodd would chastise O'Reilly for addressing him, a senator, in such a disrepectful way ("You're a propagandist, Senator. I used to respect you, I don't have any respect for you."). O'Reilly can vehemently disagree w/ Dodd, but he should at least have the class to respect the man's title.

Dianna @ 25,

I know your frustration, believe me. Americans choose Presidents the same way we choose real estate agents: We pick the biggest liar who tells us exactly what we want to hear, regardless of how they act in office. That’s how Bush II can not get kicked in the teeth when shamelessly telling everyone that he’s “praying for peace” after he started two wars and caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

Don't gouge though, that sounds icky. Canada is really quite wonderful.

I watch Canadian news on CBC and visit up there all the time - the Canucks really have it together, unlike the US where we flagellate from self-induced crisis to self-induced crisis.

@24 yeah, i caught that. it doesn't change my impression. sometimes you meet someone who -- no matter what you say or offer for a solution -- justs wants to whine and complain about how difficult things are for them. i can think of my sister, for example. it does not appeal to me on an emotional level, or a cognitive one.

completely apart from that, i'm not sure how popular a cancel medical aid to africa to provide domestic health insurance platform would go over. maybe well.

@10: One tricky bit is that the actual statistics lump together "structurally deficient" and "obsolete." So in some cases we're talking about bridges that are well designed and perfectly sound, but are simply too narrow for modern traffic volumes.

@21 & 28,

I reacted the same way as well, particularly since she does have health coverage and she apparently can afford it. Her kids are getting treatment for Crohn's, diabetes, and ADD. Kids in the third world are lucky to get treatment for dysentery. The "what about meeee" attitude gets on my nerves enough as it is, and she's essentially comparing her situation to those who are much less fortunate.

Nevertheless, it was nice seeing Romney sweat. I swear I saw panic in his eyes when he was forced to admit that a private system wastes more tax dollars than public, universal health care.
