Rove in ‘72

posted by on April 6 at 13:25 PM

This 1972 news report on the Nixon re-election campaign is interesting for the clip of a young and be-sideburned Karl Rove discussing his strategy for winning the youth vote, as well as for how it shows how drastically the television news has changed in 35 years, not just technically, but substantively.

Also noteworthy: in 1972 you were considered a “fat cat” if you plunked down $500 to have dinner with a 13” TV with Nixon on it, and Dan Rather looked a lot like my dad.

How innocent the Devil's handmaiden looks ...

See, now that scares me. I've seen College Republicans, and I don't want any of them to be the evil puppetmasters of the future.

Rove sure was a cutie back then, though.

GOP = Generation Of Peace.

Holy crap, I miss Walter Cronkite.

More than 5 solid minutes on one story. Not a single blurb about a girl fallen in a well, or the latest high school shooting rampage, or splashiest drug bust. Walter was on the nightly news throughout my entire childhood. Today's hyper perky infotainment TV news makes me ill.

Rd: Carl Rove. Now you see what 35 years of working for Satan can do to you. Nerdy but cute young man into a bald, sleazy, fat old white guy.

Holy fucking shit. Young Karl Rove looks like my ex-boyfriend. I nearly just vomited. And on my birthday, too. I guess I don't need to worry about getting old because I don't want to live in a world where Karl Rove looks like someone I find attractive.

This is the single most disturbing thing that has ever happened.
