Local This American Life Airs Tonight

posted by on March 16 at 10:35 AM

This American Life has been on a live tour for the last couple of weeks, including a stop in Seattle on March 7. The show airing tonight is from the tour. It includes Sarah Vowell, David Rakoff, and our own Dan Savage (with a special guest). I went to the live taping, it was entertaining and fun—with great music by Mates of State. The theme is What I Learned from TV, a topic close to my heart. I also learned that Ira Glass has a special place in his heart for The O.C.

This American Life airs tonight at 7:00 p.m. on KUOW 94.9 FM. You can also listen to it afterward on their website.

Or try the podcast version of the show, which can be easily obtained through iTunes.

But are the live shows available via podcast? I haven't been able to find them.

Is this the episode where Dan Savage reassures us about his son's heterosexuality and explains how CERTAIN he is that his adopted son is straight because the son was "born to throw a football" (the same Dan Savage who lamented Garrison Keillor's use of "stereotypes")?

I was in the audience at the Paramount on March 7, so I assume this is the same one...

(FYI: you can subscribe to have the podcast versions downloaded via iTunes, but an episode usually isn't available until a few days after the first date of air on the radio.)

Yes, Andy, that one.

What a great-sounding lineup. Can't wait.

On a side note, This American Life alone justifies the invention of radio.

Thanks, Dan. I'll spread the world among all my rugby-playing queer buddies, as well as my heterosexual male friends who all throw like a girl.

(Great show by the way. We had fun that night.)

Given that there was a tour, with presumably the same content in each city, what are the odds that any of the segments that ended up in the broadcast are actually from the Seattle stop? I suppose maybe they'd be tempted to use the Seattle version of Savage's bit, just to get maximum crowd delirium or whatever, but if you're editing together a show you're going to use the best takes -- unless there's some Public Radio mandate to throw a bone to every city, or something.

Tanya Harding and Iron Mike, now those are the ones I wanna hear. After all they are North Americans and they had a hella of a life.

For the love of god, why did they have to do this during March Madness? Any other Friday of the year I would totally watch.

Dan's piece was similar in Mpls to the one at the Paramount, according to a friend in the Twin Cities. However the line up was different. Example: They got Sarah Vowell. We didn't. We got David Radkoff. They didn't. Curious to hear how they put the shows together.

Sarah Vowell has a voice made for newsprint.
