2007 Valentine’s Day Bash

posted by on February 16 at 16:12 PM

For those of you that missed the Bash this year—and it was the best fucking Bash ever—here are some highlights…

The video was shot by the amazing Kelly O.

Oh, and that black woman shaking her head? She was pissed when I took a machete to that jade plant—but, hey, the guy brought it in and wanted it destroyed. It was his ex-girlfriend’s jade plant, and he’d been taking care of it for 14 years. He couldn’t heal until that jade plant was utterly destroyed and so I utterly destroyed it for him. That’s my job, it’s what the bash is all about. I was a little taken aback by how shocked and angry some folks in crowd were—particularly that righteous black woman, who was still shouting “fuck Dan Savage!” in the women’s toilet an hour later.

I mean, yeah. It’s a plant, a living thing. But someone killed the head of lettuce you had in your last salad, right?

My favorite destroys? Melting down a wedding ring and chucking the little blob of melted gold into the street—right up there with taking a hammer to a diamond engagement ring. Loved, loved, loved sending the pic of a woman’s homophobic ex-boyfriend over to Basic Plumbing, where it was plopped into a urinal and pissed all over. That’s in the video—good job, Kelly O!

Most heartbreaking moment? The cute & sweet gay boy that brought up all the pictures of his boyfriend, his ex-boyfriend, to be burned—along with the Valentine he sent his boyfriend in the Valentine’s Day issue of The Stranger.

Scariest moment? The woman at the end… with the blond hair… off her meds…

Does anyone know if there's any photo galleries from the Bash? It was a great time.

The same night was another fun event at the Crocodile, a benefit for Leukemia, with Duran Duran cover bands - I had fun at that too. Glad to hear the Bash went well also.

Was that a "Bum Fight" moment in the middle there?

I am that "black woman" who was at the valentines day bash, and I must say that Dan did a great job destroying the jade plant, however I didn't appreciate him throwing the remnants at me. Oh, for the record I did take some remnants home, and why do you have to make "righteous black woman" sound so derogetory?????

No, no! Not derogatory at all! You were righteous in a totally righteous sort of a way. And I'm sorry if you felt I threw the clippings--not remnants, that sounds so harsh, clippings!--at you. I meant to toss them to you.

And I'm glad you took them home!

The Bash is all meant in good fun, and there's usually some antagonistic moments, played for laughs, with different audience members. You were a hoot, and I was glad you got up in my face -- everyone enjoyed our sparring.

The amazing Peter Kearns contributed footage to this video as well.... I wish we could post the whole lot of it. It was mos def the craziest Valentine's Day I've ever seen.

Watching Mr. Savage chuck that sledgehammer (repeatedly) tops any greasemonkey-streaming-hardcore-sex=feed my soul could ever pray for.

Let's play hump the Reverend.

Dan,

Thank you for destroying that bracelet. I must admit I was having second thoughts just before you called me up to the stage. Over the years you've expressed a clear (but understandably common) bias against fat gay men and I was afraid that I might be the brunt of it on the stage.

But I'm so glad I went through with it!
I was very sad and depressed since last Saturday when kicked that cheatin bastard out the door, but the quite literal fire of justice you wrought really DID help me to heal. So thank you for that. Its a pity that future broken hearts won't get this public opportunity to have their broken heart avenged.

But I'm bummed that the bracelet liquification didn't make it online. Please tell me Kelly O managed to get it on tape! Is there more than one video?

That was an awesome night and I'm terribly disappointed that there won't be another. In any case I came away with some great stories to tell the suckers who actually celebrated the day. Why, Dan? Why won't there be another? Do we need to petition?

The only thing heartbreaking about that "cute & sweet" gay boy is that he's FUCKING PSYCHOTIC. But hey, we all have issues. Which is why smashing things is so wonderful. I really wanted to be there, but now I'm glad I wasn't. (ps - I'm not the ex)

Dan,
If you can't get the painting I was left with on the cover of the Stranger can you please post a picture of it being destroyed? I do sleep better knowing it is out of my house, but I know it's still lurking out there. If it does make it to the cover lets not give my ex an ego trip. Make sure it is melting, shattered, or torn. Thanks for the memories.

Dan,

You made my night!

I stood there for 3+ hours with my new guy and soaked it up.
I totally felt for the Father of 4 whose wife decided to leave him. Loved the piss fest on the 'wipes' guy - although you threw that picture a little to close to me;-)Yeah I was hit w. some jade plant too and felt it was a liitle strong to destroy but thats UR job man and the requestor was soooo happy when you did it. Lets remember who that was for everyone. I can not even imagine clinging to hope for 14 fuckin years?! You freed him. Oh and to the woman who was so upset that she has a cutting - beware of the bad juju on that.

Dude - I can go on & on here. Needless to say ever since I found you in the back of OUT mag years ago you have consistently been a hero. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video! That show was so much fun! I wasn't sure if it'd be as good as last year, but it was even better! The crazy chick who wouldn't give you the mic back was HILARIOUS! My favorite part was when you called that chick and we all screamed "F*ck you, whore!" that was great!

I really hope you do it again next year. It's the best way to spend the holiday!

Dan, I was the guy with the hideous 8-ball shirt. god, I look fat in that video, but I'm still so glad you put it up.
anyways, I'm dying to know what finally became of the shirt, since Kelly O said even the bum didn't want that fucking thing.
also, this was easily the best Valentine's Day I've ever had. please, please, pretty please don't stop doing the bash.
