The Truth About Jelly Bellies

posted by on November 2 at 16:33 PM

On October 11, the police chief of Winter Haven, Florida, Paul Goward, sent a memo to his 80-member force that complained about the high number of “jelly bellies” on the job. The force needed to lose weight, go on diet, look fitter.
He wrote:

“Take a good look at yourself…If you are unfit, do yourself and everyone else a favor. See a professional about a proper diet and a fitness training program, quit smoking, limit alcohol intake and start thinking self-pride, confidence and respectability. And stop making excuses for delaying what you know you should have been doing years ago. We didn’t hire you unfit, and we don’t want you working unfit. Don’t mean to offend, this is just straight talk. I owe it to you.”
The honest memo was considered offensive and cost the chief his job.

Insane. Officers of Winter Haven, Florida, you are truly big, fat babies.

On an early morning train into NYC last year, I overheard two cops talking about a training program they were doing that sounded a lot like boot camp. Makes sense to me that cops should stay as fit as soldiers.

The worse shapes the coppers are in, the easier it is to run away from them! Mwahahahaaaa!

Right fucking on. Being fitter in a dangerous job like policing might also mean saving your life one day.

Nothing is more effective than a FAT ASS COP!

The chief should have been given a raise, not fired.

Why do we hold calling out someone's out-of-shapeness in the same light as racism?

This fucking country....

I agree with monkey. In certain professions-firefighting, law enforcement, life guard,ect.-being in shape could make the difference between life and death, your own or someone elses.

What's more, the cheif took the mature, straitforward approach to this. He was not cruel. He was not asking them to be crazy fitness freaks, just reasonably in shape. AND he wasn't forcing them to submit to a fitness test, either-he was giving them the option of being responsible adults and the whiny babies that he oversaw couldn't take it. Maybe they will learn when being out of shape costs one of them their lives.

You know we have a problem when cops are like, "wah, he hurt my feelings..."
