Skater Haters at Marginal Way

posted by on October 26 at 10:01 AM

The guys who built and run Marginal Way Skatepark are majorly pissed off. Tuesday night, someone spray-painted illegible graffiti tags, names and anti-skater messages around the volunteer-funded park, stole wood stockpiled for new projects and crudely screwed boards to an unfinished half-pipe.

The Marginal Way Collective — guys who cleaned up the trashy area under a freeway bridge on Marginal Way two years ago — suspects BMX bikers did the damage. There’s been hostility with BMXers since the park opened; steel/aluminum-framed BMX bikes can gouge skatepark cement and Marginal Way officially banned BMXers back in January. They’ve received angry emails from bikers, says Collective member Dan Barnett, “I tell them, you know, Home Depot sells shovels and bags of cement to bikers, too, and there’s plenty of bridges in town.”

Other Collective members are more hestitant about pointing the finger at BMXers, saying the ones who antagonize the park are just a handful of Seattle’s many bikers, but everyone is frustrated with the vandalism. “Part of our deal with the city is that we gotta keep it clean and people are down there destroying our hard work,” vents member Shawn Bishop, “If this goes on, the city could pull the plug.” Looking at the wood crudely nailed to the unfinished half-pipe, Barnett thinks BMXers came and hastily finished the ramp — leaving it in good enough condition to be used under the tough wheels of BMX bikes, but useless for skaters. The wood screwed on by the vandals will have to be thrown away and that, along with the outright stolen wood, will cost the park builders several hundred dollars.

This tag says “East Marginal Bitch” … Barnett politely kept the “bitch” slightly out of the photo frame.

I’m about ready to go down there and camp out with a baseball bat,” says Barnett.

I guess the BMXers were too busy stealing those too tiny bikes from 5 year olds to build their own damn park.

Tim here from Marginal Way:

What I can't understand is why people feel the need to steal and vandalize from a grass-roots DIY organization that has been creating a community recreational space in a harsh industrial environment with few funds and a lot of sweat equity.

Fucking lame.

Check out more about MW at or

It feels like a big FU to the local skateboard community and the hard work we have put into Marginal Way Skatepark.

really lame. so much hard work and time destroyed by lazy non contributing people. i guess skaters have to build stuff for bikers too?

boo fuckin hoo. goddam punkass skaters don't give a shit about anybody else.

Posted by chris | October 26, 2006 5:42 PM

So wreck their shit. That's good thinking.

"boo fuckin hoo. goddam punkass skaters don't give a shit about anybody else."

We give a shit enough to pour thousands of dollars and untold volunteer hours into a place that was filled with garbage, drugs and prostitution until a couple years ago.

We clean, paint and build down there year round so skaters of all ages will have a cool place to ride.

Then BMX kids come down and trash the spot thinking they're giving skateboarders the finger when, in reality, you are shooting yourself in the foot.

We could help BMX'ers get your own place going but you are so deficient in vision (let alone motivation) that you can't move beyond your narrow "fuck you" philosophy.

Other bikers in Seattle are out there building unique stuff to ride, you retards are blowing it for all of them.

Is there any physical proof that bmxers caused this? I know it's pretty dusty under there, was there tons of bike tire marks all over the fresh masonite? It could have been bikes, but if there is no proof of it, stop pointing fingers. I've been busy quikcreting in the south end down here and I dont care of skaters ride it, none of them ever offer to help fix stuff up or give me a few bucks, oh well. Sorry to hear about your guys loss. I know one morning a couple of us went there to shoot pics and the little storage aera under the wall was chilling wide open with lots of stuff in there. Obviously we left it there, this was months and months ago. Hope you guys can make up lost ground quick...

this is kinda funny... how many of you skaters ever not skate a good spot even though theres "no skateboarding" signs plastered everywhere?... i'm pretty sure that doesn't stop you from having fun... how many rails and ledges have you waxed up... nice, icy, buttery marble ledges that grind for miles yet cost thousands of dollars and many man hours to build, and only taking a few sessions to "deface"?... i'm guessing quite a few... and how many times were you fucking pissed that you got kicked out of a spot, had to deal with an asshole security guard or had the cops called on you?... what i'm trying to say is, people have told you where you can't skate, but you skate there anyway. everybody knows that. the problem is, now you're trying to tell other people where they can't ride. do you really think that's going to work? sorry, but no matter what you say, do or try, bmxers will ride your park... you're only trying to do what's been done to skateboarders for years... it's sad but true.

dont hate on BMX cause of a few lame kids.

Posted by trent | October 29, 2006 10:35 AM

you guys are bitching because ONE of your many spots is wrecked. boo hoo. there are so many skateboard only parks around that you guys can ride. but if bmxers ride them for an hour either the cops boot us or skaters start shit. you dont see any "BMX" only parks do you, no. you dont. and frames wrecking the concrete? its their pegs. dumbasses.

Posted by guy | October 29, 2006 11:12 AM

It wasn't bmxers, screw you and your nonexistant proof.
