I Simply Don’t Understand How This Happened

posted by on October 18 at 15:14 PM

Remember when Vice President Dick Cheney shot that guy in the face?

How can it be that it’s taken me this long to encounter this joke?

Can the answer be as simple as “Weird Al” Yankovic being a closet Republican? (Or simply a non-partisan hater of Aerosmith?)

(Thanks to ThatShirtSite.)

If you're referring to Weird Al's odd silence given such an obvious parody, you should know that local classic-rock radio morning DJ (is there a scarier combination of words in the English language?) Bob Rivers had his version of "Cheney's Got a Gun" on the ear before the barrel of that shotgun had gone cold.

Er, make that "on the AIR."

Good. That makes me feel better.

I think the Daily Show used that as a headline too.

It was also used on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.

Trust me, the joke's been done.

(Pssst: "Pearl Necklace" is out, "Cheney" is in. Pass it on.)

So we were ready to accuse Weird Al of being a Republican because he did NOT make a parody song about Dick Cheney?

Maybe Weird Al didn't do it because it was too obvious.. which it is. Weird Al isn't known for subtlety, but give the man some credit. For fuck's sake!

Dear Matthew Fisher Wilder: I refuse to argue with you about the artistic integrity of Weird Al.

Still, it's clear that I don't expose myself to enough Tom Lehrer-style comedy.

Good lord, my six year old was singing that song parody to me months ago.

Despite being in love with "Trapped In The Drive Thru", David, no worries about Weird Al discourse from me. *fists of unity, love, and plur*

Now, comparing Lord Lehrer to Weird Al? I even like Weird Al, but still -- NOW you've crossed the line, pal!

It was new to me, too. Don't know whether you should take that as consolation, David.
