Oddly, the Bird Flu story is the only one of this bunch that provides hope. Hope that we can just reboot and start all over from scratch.

and, let's face it, everyone knows the conference will be in New Orleans - they can use the tourists and maybe some convention attendees will do work parties to clean out the half of the city that's still in ruins or trash heaps - you know, the non-white areas that Bush won't go to.
Um, after WTO Seattle's chances of getting ANY large political gathering of any kind is somewhat less than that of Antarctica's.
Guilty asses. Too bad we know none of them will do any time. But I would find great satisfaction in seeing Cheyney being subpoenaed. Even if he would just invoke the 5th amendment.
In other news, I read that something like 68 million people voted for American Idol. I cannot believe that people feel more moved to vote for some overweight old looking guy to be given some stupid title than protecting their rights.

What a scheduling coincidence for this September 11. You gotta wonder if Ken Lay's criminal sentencing will get even one tenth as much news play as Dubya's mega-palaver about the anniversary of the WTC attacks.

Well, pardon me. Wasn't it Bible-waving Baptist Bill Clinton who pardoned his fat-cat cronies in a last-minute orgy of political payoff? Yes, I believe it was, but those cronies were mere cons -- not asses-of-evil neocons -- so no big problem for fat-cat 'Crats everywhere.
And wasn't Kenny Lay one of Clinton's cronies? Yes, I believe he was, altho there's dispute about whether Lay had one of those infamous Clintonian Lincoln-Bedroom layovers. No dispute I'm aware of about Lay & Clinton plotting to build a pipeline across Afghanistan.
Re Hastert, Stephanie Miller & unhinged hacks at ABC say the FBI's after him, but the FBI & Hastert deny it. Hastert says he'll sue ABC. We shall see. If Hastert is suddenly gone like Goss, in the dark of a dark & stormy night, or if starts talking about spending more time with his family, then you'll have another big ugly Republican reptile head for your trophy-room wall.

Good lord, if the Dems have any lick of sense left about them, there's no contest: New Orleans for the '08 DNC. And throw some massive fundraisers to rebuild. There's nothing that looks better than the Democratic Party singlehandeldly doing what the GOP Government refused to do.
As far as the 2008 Dem Convention is concerned, I think Denver would be a good place. Colorado is a swing state and making the case over there would not only generate support for democrats in that state but it would generate much needed momentum in the southwestern states where I believe the democrat future lies with the growth in population in those areas.
Re: the bird flu in indonesia, the virus that infected that family was not a human to human transmissable form. When it gets there, we're fucked.

Why is the west coast always left out in the cold for conventions. Hell Seattle could give the Dems one hell of a show. (we could also give the R's a good show, but in a different way)
