I Heart Valentine’s Day!

Posted by on January 26 at 13:46 PM

I know, it’s totally geeky, but I love and always have loved Valentine’s Day. I like the color red. I like the color pink. I like candy. It’s a great day! Anyways. This year I’m including a mix CD with all my valentines (I know, I know… shut up). Every song has to have the word “cupid” and/or “valentine.” (Stop laughing and/or rolling your eyes at me.)

Here’s what I have so far:

Oukast - Happy Valentine’s Day
Otis Redding - Cupid (the best version of the infamous Sam Cooke song)
The Juliana Theory - This Valentine Ain’t No Saint
Extreme - Cupid’s Dead
Elvis Costello - My Funny Valentine
Connie Francis - Stupid Cupid
Squeeze - Is This Love?
Squeeze - Cupid’s Toy
The Get Up Kids - Valentine
ABC - Poison Arrow (fuck yes)
Gym Class Heroes - Cupid’s Chokehold
The Divorce - Call the Police
Billy Bragg - Valentine’s Day is Over
Tom Waits - Blue Valentines
Elton John - No Valentines
Tiger Army - Cupid’s Victim
New Kids on the Block - Valentine Girl
Fifteen - Sweet Valentine
Ryan Adams - Oh My Sweet Valentine
Smashing Pumpkins - Cupid de Locke
Elliott Smith - Cupid’s Trick
My Bloody Valentine - Cupid Come
The Replacements - Valentine

Am I missing anything? Anything GOOD, I mean? Not all these songs are good, but there’s some really shitty stuff out there… like a Good Charlotte song (which I left out on purpose). So speak up. I know there’s at least one other Valentine’s Day loving dork that can get behind me with this. Don’t be shy.

Good list! You should also put in Chet Baker's My Funny Valentine, which is gorgeous. It'd be cool to have that alongside EC's version. I'm sure there are more, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Oh, and you've got a few extra apostrophes in there, in case you care.

goldfinger - more today than yesterday
kind of like spiting - valentines day is over
vendetta red - three chord valenine
alkaline trio - enjoy your day

"Valentine's Day" by Steve Earle...it's a weeper...

also, i was so excited to give you my ideas, i forgot how to use my opposable thumbs.

also! Billy Bragg's gorgeous "Valentine's Day Is Over," which I imagine is the song covered by Kind of Like Spitting, listed above...

Well I have Billy Bragg's "Valentine's Day is Over"... I should listen to all the versions, though. I haven't heard Kind of Like Spitting's.

And I KNEW there was a Alkaline Trio song I was missing! I dunno about that Vendetta Red song, though... we'll see.

Thanks for the suggestions!

After reading your stuff, I'd say you also really, really, really like exclamation points too!

It's TRUE!

Megan, what's your SN on The Stranger interoffice iTunes network?

I love the new Delays single Valentine, but it may be a little tough to snag as only the video's out so far.

I DO love exclamation points! It IS true! I don't have a SN on the iTunes network, actually.

I have been dying to speak up for this song for a public v-day list! Hidden gem:

"Valentine" by Old 97s - "Fight Songs" album, track #12

Dang, I was going to mention the Old 97s too. That's a keeper, as is Tom Waits' "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis". I was at one point partial to Carissa's Wierd's "All Apologies And Smiles, Yours Truly, Ugly Valentine", though that may have been partly due to a crush on their violinist.

If you open the eligibility to simply "love", The Magnetic Fields' "Love Is Like a Bottle of Gin" is beautiful; I find myself humming it in moments of high stress.

Another Sunny Day, "I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Know I Exist"

gym class heroes - cupid's chokehold
mandy moore - stupid cupid
run dmc - dumb girl
hillary duff - tell me a story [this one is for jizosh]
the raveonettes - red tan
ben kweller - hospital bed
boz ii men - woman dont cry

spoon - the two sides of monsieur valentine

Tom Waits' Blue Valentine (is this is a different song than "No Valentines") is one of my favorites.

Uggh. Scratch that last comment, please.

Dick Grande - "My Inflatable Valentine"

Does "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder mention Valentines Day? Yes, that song is ass-puckeringly terrible, but it just might be a nice way to end the perfect mix cd.

Also, good call on the Fifteen inclusion.

It's obscure, but how about "Stalker Valentine" by 2nu2 Records?
