Letter From Chicago

posted by on November 4 at 7:40 AM

ballot%20receipt.jpgI’ll save Eli one posting… got to my polling place at 7:30, as usual. No line, but I was the 30th person in my precinct to vote—normally, I arrive there and am among the first five to vote. My precinct includes many college students, so I suspect the lines will be longer later. No electioneering outside, just a lonesome dog tied to a post, with a plastic bag, already filled, dangling from the same post. My main thought: Man, let’s throw that sack of shit out. And whoever owns that dog oughta do the same.

Chicago updates will start around 4:30 pm Seattle time. First stop: someone who lives across the street from Obama.

My partner stood in line at 6:30 AM for 45 minutes to vote (47th ward) before work. It was a bit quieter when I voted (~9:00) and one of Ald. Schulter's people was handing out "sample ballots" to remind us who we're supposed to vote for. I have a feeling it's going to pick up quite a lot this afternoon.

Just voted up in lakeview (44th). There was no line whatsoever, but volunteers said the lines had been over and hour earlier, and I there'd been about 250 ballots cast before mine.

With the high level of twenty-somethings in the neighborhood - many students - I was expecting a longer line around this time. Part of me is disappointed that it ended so quickly.

I've been feeling very anxious about this election (last night I had terrible dreams of watching inital results come in that were all McCain), but for what it's worth, I feel completely at ease after casting my ballot.

Today will feel like the Cubs finally winning the Series would - only this will actually matter.
