“That’s Not Change We Can Believe In”

posted by on October 27 at 13:37 PM

AP sez:

WASHINGTON — The ATF says it has broken up a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree.

In court records unsealed Monday, agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target an unnamed but predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads.

Yeah, that’ll show ‘em who the inferior race is. Jesus fucking Christ.

Holy balls...

It's things like this that make me fear for the survival of our species, and question whether it even should.

Everyone, hate everyone.

Racists are always the best evidence against their own case, you know with the whole supremacy thing and all.

Maybe there are 102 black people at the school.

@5,6: According to the stories, it's from 88 and 14, two big numbers in white supremacy. It's really sickening, but I'm not surprised. Lewis was more than 100% correct.

Inciting people to violence is a felony. Somebody should remind Ms. Palin of that fact. After they explain to her what "felony" means. Also, "incite."

This is what worries me:

They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.

I mean, I'm sure there's no shortage of people who want to see Obama dead, but it's the people who are willing to sacrifice their own lives (as you'd most likely have to do to be able to pull it off) to get it done who are truly frightening.

"The number 14 stands for the "14 Words statement." It was authored by white supremacist David Lane...The number 88 is an abbreviation for Heil Hitler. 'H' is the eighth letter of the alphabet; repeated twice, it yields HH. There is also some similarity in shape between '88' and 'HH', exploited to good effect by skinhead artists." etc...

Is it encouraging that they are catching these guys? And that they are all morons with harebrained schemes that would never work? Or should we worry that the haven't caught the ones with a good plan?

My first guess was 102 = the number of electoral votes John McCain will earn based entirely on racism. Fuckin' people. This story fills me with revulsion and loathing.

Re: Racist numerology. White supremacists think they're so smart, but they're not. They're really, really stupid.

@9: Well, America has been mostly shielded from extremisms that are being dealt with in Europe and the Middle East. I don't think we'll be shielded much longer. I think with the economy going down, and more people having 'nothing to lose', this can only get worse for us. Poverty doesn't only lead to small time crime. Nowadays, it seems to also lead to more home-grown terrorism.

Which is fucked because Repubs think only their candidate can "keep us safe" but their own people are the ones causing all this stupid non-sense. Fucking bigots, the whole lot of the right wing party. Goddamnit I hate them all.

CNN just said that the plot was poorly-formed & not very legitimate. Their idea of assassinating the (soon to be!) president was more of an afterthought to some of the other things they were planning on doing.

I know there's a collective holding of the breath as to whether or not Obama will be harmed, but I really think that it is better to keep the idea itself out of the ether.

There's too many fucking crazies with sawed-off shotguns and nothing to do. Not that they're reading slog, but do we really need to give them any ideas.

My favorite game is searching MySpace for douches like these. I could only find one of them and his friend (girlfriend?) who helped them try to rob houses. Both are private but those are pretty cool pics.

Daniel Cowart: http://www.myspace.com/daniel_wp_88 (mood: crazy)
Danni Stafford (friend): http://www.myspace.com/aspiringtosomething2582 (mood: hopeful)

Thank whatever God you may believe in that the desire and the ability to commit these kinds of heinous acts are rarely found together in the same person.

@15, item b: For years, Germany's conservative party, the Catholic Democrats (CDU), has been encouraging foreigner hatred and then encouraging foreigner haters to vote their ticket. The classic positioning-your-party-to-attract-dumb-voters-and-then-cutting-education-and -culture-budgets.

I won't even get started on Jörg Haider.

@15,

Yeah, but there was a surge in domestic terrorism in the '90s, even as we had an economic boom. Those incidents have been dropping off over the past eight years. I'm not convinced it's just a matter of economic trouble, at least in this country. I think it's also caused by right wing radicals feeling threatened. They're threatened by their losses in the culture wars.

"Poorly-formed" kinda goes with the territory.

"Both individuals stated they would dress in all-white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt," the court complaint states.

I would expect the real danger lies elsewhere.

I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as I heard the plot begins with an attempted robbery of a gun shop: "Hey guys...um, heil Hitler and all that...here's what we do: We walk into a room with people in it who have way more guns than we do and they know how to use them, then......" Idiots. No worries, my fellow liberal elitists, we're safe for now. : )

Point taken, Elenchos, and shame on me for relying on annecdotal evidence - I was thinking about a story my husband tells about the post-Rodney King riots here in L.A. He was watching a store down the street go up in flames when several people rioted into a shop with looting on their minds. Laughing, he called his roommates to watch and they came outside just in time to see the terrified outlaws fleeing the, yes, gun store, pursued by well-armed and angry employees.
