I mean, I'm sure there's no shortage of people who want to see Obama dead, but it's the people who are willing to sacrifice their own lives (as you'd most likely have to do to be able to pull it off) to get it done who are truly frightening.

@9: Well, America has been mostly shielded from extremisms that are being dealt with in Europe and the Middle East. I don't think we'll be shielded much longer. I think with the economy going down, and more people having 'nothing to lose', this can only get worse for us. Poverty doesn't only lead to small time crime. Nowadays, it seems to also lead to more home-grown terrorism.

CNN just said that the plot was poorly-formed & not very legitimate. Their idea of assassinating the (soon to be!) president was more of an afterthought to some of the other things they were planning on doing.

I know there's a collective holding of the breath as to whether or not Obama will be harmed, but I really think that it is better to keep the idea itself out of the ether.

Yeah, but there was a surge in domestic terrorism in the '90s, even as we had an economic boom. Those incidents have been dropping off over the past eight years. I'm not convinced it's just a matter of economic trouble, at least in this country. I think it's also caused by right wing radicals feeling threatened. They're threatened by their losses in the culture wars.

my guess is this whole things maid up, it reeks of media manipulation.

I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as I heard the plot begins with an attempted robbery of a gun shop: "Hey guys...um, heil Hitler and all that...here's what we do: We walk into a room with people in it who have way more guns than we do and they know how to use them, then......" Idiots. No worries, my fellow liberal elitists, we're safe for now. : )

Point taken, Elenchos, and shame on me for relying on annecdotal evidence - I was thinking about a story my husband tells about the post-Rodney King riots here in L.A. He was watching a store down the street go up in flames when several people rioted into a shop with looting on their minds. Laughing, he called his roommates to watch and they came outside just in time to see the terrified outlaws fleeing the, yes, gun store, pursued by well-armed and angry employees.
