Media Re: Today In Homophobic Advertising

onSnickers also got slammed for this ad, which ran during Super Bowl XLI:
A shit storm ensued and Snickers pulled the ad. More on the controversy here, along with photos of football players getting all squeamish over a lil’ man kiss.

As I recall, they didn't pull the ad because of calls it was homophobic, but rather because of calls it was homo-erotic.
May I recommend the Three Musketeers commercial by Jimmy Kimmel?
I never saw that ad before, but as a gay man I find it a satire on homophobia, rather than homophobic. I say it should run alongside that British Heinz deli mayo ad that was pulled for being TOO gay.
I think it's funny. Why are Americans so sarcasm-impaired?
@4 Because sarcasm depends entirely on the context of it's creator. "Big Gay Sketch Show" and "Blue Collar TV" could do the exact same sketch, and the message conveyed would be wildly different.
The problem presented in the Snickers commercial is that the creator's intentions aren't explicitly clear- Thus you have Gays offended because it's perceived to be homophobic, and Homophobes offended because it's perceived to be homoerotic.
I tend to think the ad falls on the side of homophobia- not just because I'm a gay man, but because they chose to include footage of athletes reactions of disgust on their website... footage that no doubt prolongs the negative gay image to a new generation of impressionable fans.
People are too sensitive.
Snickers...packed with penis.
Homophobia is alive and well, and there is no doubt about it. Still, after watching the ad I felt compelled to rub one out.
That wasn't homophobic that was precious
you think that's bad? try being a woman and watch tv. it's inescapable.
Homophobic? Allow me to add my voice to the chorus of puzzlement seen in this thread. It was SO not homophobic. It made gentle fun of homophobia first by suggesting that some men's deep fear of a "homo moment" could easily be trumped by a candy bar, and then by showing the absurdity of those men't version of an exculpatory act. The mere PRESENCE of homophobia in the commercial, does not make the commercial itself, or the producer's intentions homophobic. Puh-leeeze!
This is a genius parody of homophobia,
I laughed heartily at the commercial
when it first aired, and still laugh
today. har.

you guys should all click on the link. I thought the ad was sort of borderline like everyone else, kind of offensive, kind of cute, and to be honest agreed with tiffany @10 more than anyone. But if you follow the link it shows the rest of the ads, which are way worse than chest-hair-ripping. In one the "quick, do something manly" leads to beating the shit out of each other with a wrench. Which might be closer to reality and is way more fucked up.
