Internal Monologue on Where to Eat Lunch

posted by on March 28 at 13:33 PM

Boom Noodle sounds tempting, but I’m always a little disappointed when I eat the food and a little mad when I get the check.

I wish we had a Samurai Ramen up here.

I guess I could go to Ballet again. But I don’t know if I can face another goddamned chicken curry. Maybe I should dine and dash, just so I get 86’d and never have to argue with myself about whether to eat lunch there ever again.

[Eats a stale almond from desk drawer. Fade to black.]

Uh, Boom noodle is very reasonable when it comes to prices, and the food is fucking tits. People who don't like Boom noodle or talk any level of shit about it (including minor disappointment) should be shot in the face.

Not like it matters. It's practically impossible to please Mr. Kiley.

I, too, eat at Ballet far too often. Like, 3 to 4 times a week. Sometimes more. But it's so good. And cheap. I love the peanut curry.

I can't justify Boom Noodle when Ballet exists. And I wish that Oasis wasn't such shit.

Boom has rice for 1.50 - great green beans for 3.00 - they need to do coffee - and the food is good - don't like the bench tables, but it is novel

late happy hour at the bar

I'm eating Shish Tawook, with pilaf and hummus while I watch snow fall on Mercer Slough out my office window.

Courtney, you're going to have the peanut butter
soup with smoked duck and mashed squash. New York magazine
called it a 'playful but mysterious little dish." You'll
love it. And then...the red snapper with violets and
pine nuts. I think that'll follow nicely.

I think Boom Noodle is pretty awesome. Love those eggs.

Boom noodle has yet to impress. I feel the same way when I ate there.

samantha @2 has it right.

I say go the extra block or 2 and try Moishe's Deli across from Bill's off broadway (it's called something else now but the same people work there). Good, cheap teriyaki or sandwiches. When I worked in that area I ate there at least 3 times a week.

Mirch Masala is just a couple of blocks the other direction on B'Way. For a buck or two more they've got a great all-you-can eat lunch buffet, far, far better than the barely digestible Maharaja.

the trick with boom is ordering appetizers, which are all very fabulous and very filling (and very cheap!)....two or three always does it for me.

I ate at Subway as I was out of groceries at home. My little corner of West Seattle has nothing decent within walking distance...

No, the trick is to order green tea, beef tataki, and beef yakisoba. 3 times a week, no more than four.

Sheesh.

And don't forget the Chinese place above the Q! It's good, rib-sticking junky Chinese comfort food.

what i and my date had at boom noodle was terrible and overpriced. i would not go back there again, except for that a friend of mine said i must go back and try his favorite dish. i will give them a second chance. but, only once.

I second the rec for Mirch Masala. The same people own Masala of India up near Northgate, and the girl and I would drive there nearly every weekend for the buffet. Now that they're on Broadway we eat there way too often, and the staff recognized us from the northern store and treat us extra nice. I love the dolphin faucets in the bathrooms.

Damnit, now I want garlic naan w/ a couple ramakans of the butter chicken sauce. And a mango lassi, and chai. AARRGGGG WHY DO I HAVE TO BE IN BELLEVUE?!?!?!?!

that almond was a roofie; that's why you faded to black.

if what i hear about the Stranger staff is true, you've probably been anally ravaged by this time...

Oasis Cafe is pretty good too. I liked the spicy tuna roll.

I like Oasis, but for the $ I would rather have a private table at Boom. And Ballet's menus and decor are older than Jesus; even though they apparently had a make over.

Ramen: 10 cents at Fred Meyer
Extra veggies: 40 cents at PCC Fremont

I ate at Cornish College's cafe. Housemade calzone with proscuitto, drunken goat cheese, asparagus, caramelized shallots and tomato, with a caesar salad, for 6.25.

One of the best lunches in South Lake Union, so don't y'all screw it up.

@6 - you wish. Actually, I have no idea what's for dinner, I haven't cooked it yet.

I miss Ballet. I just can't bring myself to go back after having them bring out a curry with a roach the size of a pumpkin seed on top of the very middle of that mound of rice. It was like a special black on white roach rice presentation. And then they brought me another one and I tried to figure out whether I would let denial and hunger take over common sense but no, common sense won, and there was another drowned in the sauce. At least it was a lot smaller - sesame seed size. But I was done. Couldn't do it. Didn't pay.

And they gave me a gift certificate for $15.

NaFun, I had no idea the two restaurants were related! For years Masala has been one of my favorite "undiscovered" restaurants in Seattle, and I try to go in whenever I happen to be up in the neighborhood, which these days isn't very often.

You settled it for me - I can handle a lot of variations when it comes to food - the cast iron stomach.

But ROACHES, no way. Bye bye Ballet. Never again.

6.00 beer and burger at Purr on Mondays is a good deal, great fries, ball buster giant real meaty burger. I have discovered Mac and Jack to go with - good stuff.

Huh. I went to Masala once, didn't care for it, but I liked Mirch Masala a fair amount.
