Upset of the Night?

posted by on February 5 at 18:15 PM

If I seem inundated with Clinton spin this evening, it’s because I am. The Obama campaign has been largely silent today, at least on the email front. Meanwhile, the Clinton camp has been sending out “Hillary Wire” updates throughout the day, and is sending out “talking points” after each poll closing and/or state call.

With that in mind, here’s what I just received from camp Clinton under the subject heading, “UPSET OF THE NIGHT - MASSACHUSETTS FOR CLINTON”:

One of the biggest surprises of the night is Massachusetts.

Despite the fact that Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry were actively supporting and campaigning for Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that the Governor of Massachusetts endorsed Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that Obama visited Massachusetts just last night, Hillary Clinton won the state.

This is a strong victory and shows that Hillary Clinton has strength in places where Barack Obama was expected to win.

?? weird.
he was down by 20 in January. It's all about the expectations game, isn't it?

Clinton vs. McCain in Nov

Barack Obama was never expected to win Mass. That's bullshit. It did break for Clinton by a larger margin than she was expecting, so she'll pick up a few of the delegates that she lost in Illinois and Georgia (where Obama won bigger than expected).

They're still tied, people.

HRC campaign is getting called out all over the TV right now for this spin job. Obama was polling there at about 22%. So since he is running at 39%, it is an upset, for Obama. He is getting more delegates there than expected.

Even the Slog is full of spinmeisters...Obama's losses are really victories in disguise. And Clinton's wins are really less than expected. Please give me a break. What was really important was the 17 voters in Iowa and New Hampshire. Is this any way to pick a candidate?

NPR also just reported that one of the surprising things about her win in NY was how much money Clinton spent there and the huge get out the vote effort they mounted. They found it surprising that she had to campaign as hard as she did (noting that Obama barely ran an ad in Illinois).

So your response to receiving Clinton spin is to cut and paste it?

Watching the Clintonista campaign spin, you realize exactly what asshats this campaign really has for it's strategy consultants.

Hillary and camp are nothing but slime, and the SLOG is doing nothing but regugitating what their spin doctors are dishing out.

Geessshhhhh

@ 7 - most Democratic voters are going to vote for whoever wins the nomination, the Slog's internecine bullshit aside.

Jesus. I'm pretty sure that Clinton also outspent Obama by a wide margin in Mass. She has no shame.

Oh, please. These are election night press releases. Not "slime".

I agree with the spin this time. I didn't expect Obama to win, but I did expect it to be much tighter race.

Guess you guys can just get shitfaced now - it's pretty much over for tonight. Don't expect CA results tonight; it ain't gonna happen. GO HILLARY!

Agreed, I was thinking the same thing about MA.

Kerry and Kennedy endorsements apparently aren't worth a ton in their home state.

exileinWestSeattle says Deval Patrick is being overlooked here. If Fnarf is right, then maybe they were quality endorsements after all. hmm. This requires more beer.

Clinton's basically saying "fuck you" to Kennedy and Kerry. Not sure that will help her down the road. And calling Mass an upset is pretty funny.

It's a Northeast thing if anything. While they may not necessarily "like" Clinton as a person, they are more familiar with her record than Obama's who is in Illinios. And she actually does have a decent record as a Senator in New York (which she will NEVER get credit for).

It's a Northeast thing. People are more focused on a competent person to a do a job and not necessarily a likable one. And I have to admit, Hilliary isn't the easiest person to like.

Besides ... this is one of the few cases where the Senators endorsements have more NATIONAL pull than state pull ... go figure.

Um she was supposed to win here and he was supposed to lose. I don't understand how this is an upset.
