The Stranger Suggests
Reading
Randall Kennedy at Town Hall
Randall Kennedy, a Harvard Law School professor and author of Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word, reads from his new and timely book Sellout. Now, who is a sellout? Condoleezza Rice is a sellout; Colin Powell is a sellout; Clarence "Uncle" Thomas is a sellout; even Barack Obama is a motherfucking sellout. And what is a sellout? A sellout is a black person who sold his/her soul for white recognition and success. Kennedy's book explores the history of the idea of "racial betrayal." (Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, 634-3400. 7:30 pm, $5.)

Yeah, I'm so sick of those blacks who aren't "real" black. "Those people" who are bad at being black, or just get black all wrong. Put 'em back on track, Randall! Back on the black track!
I thought Jerry Large had a good column about his book in the Seattle Times.
Nice interview with Mr. Kennedy on KUOW this a.m., which, due to the fact it took me 1.5 hours to get from CapHill to Wallingford, I was able to listen to in its entirety.
Especially liked his observation on the changing perception of "Uncle Tom" in black culture.
Charles, if being a successful black makes you a sellout, then rest assured that you will never be a sellout.
BURN!
look, charles called clarence thomas an uncle tom, which i was excoriated for just a month ago on this very board.
i look forward to his excoriation for employing this archaic term.
Which is kind of ironic @6, since the Uncle Tom of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel was anything BUT a sell-out...
