David Frum on Romney’s Speech

posted by on December 6 at 13:35 PM

Sorry to dissent from my colleagues on the Corner, but once the murmurs over the oratory subside, people are going to realize: that speech did not work. Here’s why:
“There is one fundamental question about which I often am asked. What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. My church’s beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths. Each religion has its own unique doctrines and history. These are not bases for criticism but rather a test of our tolerance.”

To be blunt, Romney is saying:

It is legitimate to ask a candidate, “Is Jesus the son of God?”

But it is illegitimate to ask a candidate, “Is Jesus the brother of Lucifer?”

It is hard for me to see a principled difference between these two questions, and I think on reflection that the audiences to whom Romney is trying to appeal will also fail to see such a difference. Once Romney answered any question about the content of his religious faith, he opened the door to every question about the content of his religious faith. This speech for all its eloquence will not stanch the flow of such questions.

Mormons are just as Christian as Muslims are.

They both believe that Jesus was a prophet, just not the final Prophet.

They both have additional texts that follow the Old Testament and New Testament (although Mormons don't have as different a compilation of texts for the New Testament).

But calling them Christian ... um, no.

Ha, i did not know that juicy little tid-bit about LDS theology.

I wish he had said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of Santa Claus." It would really spice things up.

This picture screams "dictator".

I think it's an abomination of Biblical proportions that in America where "church" and state are seperate, this sort of lewd discussion comes up. I will fight to the end to prevent the Christo-Taliban from taking over America.

I agree with Mr. Frum... you can't answer one question that paints you in a good light and refuse to answer other questions that won't without people commenting on it.

I also agree with Will in Seattle. Mormons, LDS, whatever have a valid faith, but it's not christianity. Just like Christians aren't Jews.

Am the only one who wouldn't know that Romney made this speech today had I not looked at the front page of SLOG?

I don't get why this is being discussed in a rational way. I mean, if there is a logical inconsistency or contradiction in what Romney is saying, why would religious people care? The whole point of being religious is to pitch rationality out the window and believe whatever.

Since there is no place in the GOP for atheists, this is just a matter of getting Mitt's solipsism to line up with the solipsism of the other Republicans. And that is entirely a matter of whatever they decide they want to think, not what follows logically from the facts.

damn, poe. you're right just look at those shiny boots, total authoritarian

Posted by vooodooo84 | December 6, 2007 2:29 PM

yes, this was opening a door he did not want to open. he should not be trying to demonstrate i'm one you, i'm a christian, but instead, like JFK, illustrate i'm one of you, i'm an american.

and, elenchos, your comments confuse he if your are being serious or sarcastic. why would religious people care? seriously, because that's what they do. they care (too much) about religion.

Romney is Lucifer.

Remember that line in "Broadcast News" about The Devil not being some gnarling motherfucker with long claws and yellow fang-like teeth?

No, he'll be pretty and he'll have a soothing voice and a killer wardrobe. He'll charm the shit out of you. But his message will be: cruelty is kind, heartlessness is wisdom, war is bad but don't you love that defense contractor paycheck?

Romney is a white bread, empty shell front for big business and the military-industrial complex. He's the new and improved Bush. Give 'em some of that ol' time religion while backing trucks into the Treasury Department. Running a Mormon was risky, but really...who's more "morally" tight-assed than a Mormon? And the red states love that, don't they?

As usual, David Frum proves he is stupid. The problem with Mittster's speech was in his saying that freedom follows from religion, which is WRONG!

Posted by Tlazolteotl | December 6, 2007 3:31 PM

Recall that Frum is the idiot who coined 'Axis of Evil.' Guy is a heavyweight toolbag. I think I'll send Frum my 'I Heart Mormon Pussy' bumper sticker.

So, the Christians vote out Romney and vote in Huckabee who thinks the Earth is only 6 thousand years old and God created Eve from Adam's McRib. Great.

But what about the all-important, demon-rebuking MAGIC MORMON UNDERWEAR issue??

Posted by Original Andrew | December 6, 2007 3:47 PM

Romney's speech makes me so mad. Gah! What a douche.

Posted by Greg | December 6, 2007 4:22 PM

Sorry to just get into class, but who is David Frum?

Posted by la | December 6, 2007 4:43 PM

Oh Mittens! Your crazy mythological beliefs are just as valid as everyone elses (ie. not at all).

Posted by chi type | December 6, 2007 4:56 PM

I'm confused. Will someone please explain to me why any of you gives a shit what ANY Republicrit says? I mean, it's not like any of us would ever consider VOTING for any of the douche-nozzles. . . .

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | December 6, 2007 5:19 PM

I'm not sure why we care about Mormons or dog butts either one. C'mon, Dan, get behind a behind we can all get behind!

Posted by Wolf | December 6, 2007 5:44 PM

It's too bad the question couldnt have been something along the lines of "Do you believe it is important to uphold the constitution of the United States?"

Posted by Brad | December 6, 2007 6:43 PM

slog is just obsessed with romney since this speech. honestly, does anyone really think he might be elected? no one but people who are just like him (and many of their wives) will vote for him. last i looked, there weren't enough of those to constitute a majority.

Posted by ellarosa | December 6, 2007 7:45 PM

@16 he is a former Bush speech writer, talk about a future killing job title

Posted by vooodooo84 | December 6, 2007 8:32 PM

It's hard to credit a guy named Frum with a deep understanding of Christianity or the LDS church. (Frum is Yiddish for exceptionally closely observing the Jewish commandments, particularly those relating to the Sabbath, diet, and sex.) Maybe when they need someone to explain Judaism, they could get a guy named "Ayatollah".
