Music

Fremont Oktoberfest

The foolish go to Fremont Oktoberfest to drink beer; the wise head to Fremont Oktoberfest to drink beer and listen to music. Saturday's aural offerings are strong enough to froth your head, with the Lonely H serving pull-tab classic rock, Thee Emergency tapping into sweaty garage soul, and the Saturday Knights pouring 40s of funk. Drink up. (N Canal St, www.fremontoktoberfest.com. 11 am–midnight, $20 for admission and four drink tokens, 21+.)

Last Year there was an amazing sculpture, about 20ft high- a gree tree ogre thing - yellow brick road-like.

The artist was on hand to talk, as I of course took the obnoxious opportunity to do so.

Turns out a month ago, I was in half-price books, and I'm browsing the lowest possibly priced cds and next thing you know I'm chatting with another Browser- she turns out to be ogre artist's assistant. We couldn't talk for long because they (the artist was elsewhere in the store) were shipping out a massive Wizards of the Coast sculpture to Indiana in the morning....

yeah, drink some Moose Drool fro me would ya Jonathan!

Instead I will drink pumpkin ale at home because it only costs $4 for that bottle instead of $20. Plus I won't have to wear pants.

I went to Oktoberfest on Friday. It really sucked.

1. $20 for 20oz. of beer, and I didn't like a single one that I tried
2. No cover from the rain. The whole thing just takes place in an open alley.
3. No lighting other than the dull orange street lights. I was expecting paper lamps strung above, christmas lights, a neon german flag maybe, anything other than two crappy street lights! What the hell, fremont?
4. No tables and chairs (except a few broken plastic ones) even though there were empty areas in the far end that would have been perfect for that.

In summary, don't bother going.

Saturday evening was my first visit to the Fremont Oktoberfest and will most likely be my last.

It was basically just a series of long, crowded and slow-moving lines: lines to get inside, lines to get a tiny sample of beer, lines to get bratwurst or curly fries (was there any other food available?) and lines for the bathroom. All this in an overcrowded street surrounded by chainlink fence.

I read that this was a new location, but I can't imagine it was a preferred one. No room to move, no character/decor, no grass or trees, no place to sit down, no fun.

But The Stranger's beer was good and STRONG.

We're all aware that it's still September, right?

crystal - the real oktoberfest starts around the last 12 days in september.

also, you don't drink frou-frou little "tasting" glasses, but a mass, a voluminous litre of beer.

fremont's oktoberfest is a sham of the real thing.

additionally, if your beer is being sold in 7-11, it's no longer an effing micro-brew.

soooo glad it's over. now just to get through the red bull soap box derby next week.

Yeah I went Saturday at 1 & it pretty much sucked. I mean, I tried to enjoy the tastes but there was basically nothing going on. When we left there were big lines to get in. My companion pointed out that it's getting busier but we concluded it probably won't get any more interesting.

This was my 1st & only visit. Maybe I'll try Leavenworth sometime. A beer garden should have chairs right? And normal-sized (if not larger than life) beers.

Traditional music would have been more fun, maybe accordians. Is it just me or was the band basically away from all the actual beer?

It felt more like a beer convention than a party. I should have brought cards.
