“Suck it, Jesus.”

posted by on September 12 at 9:24 AM

Kathy Griffin, the Rodney Dangerfield of her generation, won an Emmy last night. She failed, however, to thank Jesus—lamb of God, bestower of Emmys, awarded of Super Bowl Rings—and all hell has broken loose.

Comic Kathy Griffin’s “offensive” remarks about Jesus at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be cut from a pre-taped telecast of the show, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said on Tuesday….

“A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus,” an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. “Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now.”

Catholic attack dog Bill Donohue soiled himself in reaction to Griffin’s remarks, and then issued a statement about how, you know, if Griffith had said “Suck it, Muhammad,” the organizers of the Emmy Awards show would have killed her on the spot. Griffin, also a Catholic, refused to apologize, retract her remarks, thank Jesus, or order Muhammed to suck anything.

Griffin’s reaction to the imbroglio, according to a statement issued by her publicist: “Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?”

I wasn't a huge fan of Kathy Griffin, but now I really am!! Suck it, TV Academy!

God, how I love Kathy Griffin! (no pun intended).

Griffin! It's Kathy Griffin! People make this mistake all the time, and it confirms for Kathy her D-list status.

But, God, how I love her. So much better than Margaret Cho. No lectures at her show, just venom for celebrities.

The answer to Ms. Griffin's (presumably rhetorical) question is, of course, "yes."

With the exception of the Irish, who had a sense of humor long before St. Patrick showed up.

Griffin. Not Griffith. And man, what a great acceptance speech. Kudos to her!

I've been on the fence about Ms. Griffin since she got her own network. But this speech makes me love her forever.

Kathy Griffin is my hero for today.

and yes....SUCK IT ZEUS! (no one worships him anymore, so sad)

The idea that God/Jesus/Lord/Him has a sense of humor is blasphemy. At least that's what my mother would say.

Oh, and she really needs to drop this 'd-list' routine. It's pretty fucking old.

#9: Why? It's a great theme and is totally working for her.

(Note: There's one more "Griffith" in that post. Merci.)

She's freakin' hilarious and I'm glad she got an award.

Oh so funny! I now worship at the altar of Kathy Griffin!

Ok, not really, but she is THE WOMAN. The beauty of her D-list status is that she can get away with telling Jesus to suck it and the only folks who get peevish are a few tight-assed (and not in the good way) religionistas. I adore her sense of humor so very much.

I, also have been on the fence about Kathy Griffin. No longer... "Suck it, Jesus" may well become my new mantra.

A delightful post. The idiot Christians and Islamo-Fascists will finally dissolve in the end.

Judaism as a culture, religion and philosophy is the only hope for this planet. The Stranger is the only Seattle paper with the balls to call out Christianity and Islam as toxic fairy tales for children.

I back blasphemy 100%, especially in the name of humor. I'm glad she won't apologize. My love of her is starting to outweigh my hate of her. Cheers Kathy!

how appropos that i just finished Sam Harris' End of Faith.

i wouldn't be surprised if she's blacklisted & her career crashes. no funnies about our irrational beliefs!

Okay, that's awesome. Good girl. And tv should take the crucifix out of its ass and admit it hasn't been a religious industry since... ever. Suck it.

@17: Truly. Dawkins also frequently points out the absurdity of society's unwillingness to question irrational beliefs when it comes to religion. We - even nonbelievers - afford deep respect to these beliefs even though they don't make any sense.

Cheers to Kathy for having a sense of humor.

Yay for Kathy Griffin. Also am I a bad person for fantasizing about beating Bill Donohue to death with a rifle butt? Repeatedly slamming it into his face until his skull is all soft and pulpy and he's choking on his teeth and blood while the dense skull fragments I've driven into his tiny frontal lobes cause him to go into a fatal spasm?

Kathy Griffin is hilarious and I don't mean anything bad by this, but does anyone else, when they look at pictures of her, just go, "Oh, look, a drag queen." Like, it's not even a question: if I saw a photograph of this woman and didn't know who she was, I would know for a moral certainty that she was born with a penis.

In fact, now that I think about it, when Dan's in drag the two of them could be sisters.

Please. If she'd said "Suck it, Muhammad" at the Emmys, this mutherfucker would have made her a saint.

Also: Bill Donohue is one man with a computer. One man with a computer does not get to decide what all the rest of us find acceptable or unacceptable. Suck it, Bill Donohue!

Yes, Kathy Griffin looks like a drag queen. "God" love her.

She also went through a half dozen botched Lasik surgeries that has left her partially blind in one eye. It really stinks. She talks about it here:

At first I was going to rage about the comparison to Dangerfield. (his film debut was Czervik in Caddyshack for cryin' out loud. He stole the show in one of the best comedies of all time!) but you now what. Fuck it. I'm on board. She is killing it right now.

Hate speech? Jeez, lighten up, Donohue. I’m a youth minister (true, that’s not the same thing as a “real” minister. Plus I’m a Protestant) and I looooove Kathy Griffin. Who saw “Everyone Can Suck It?” Remember Kathy mocking her mom’s blasphemous tirade about Rosie O’Donnell’s cruise? Classic.

Whether or not something is offensive is all in the spirit its taken. Sure Kathy’s a fallen Catholic, but she’s not an anti-Catholic. Had Christopher Hitchens made the same joke, it would have been grossly offensive. My 2 cents.

Another Zinger that will also enter the annals of Kick Fucking Ass from Griffin was:
Idiot Reporter: "Who is the most over rated celeberty of the 21 centuty?"

Griffin: "Jesus."

We have alot of people praying for you Kathy and all your supporters.I pray that God will have mercy on your soul.
God had everything to do with you receiving the award or any other accomplishments that you have had in your life. The reason we are alive is because GOD has His hand on us.
Had it not been for JESUS giving His life for you and me,we would not have a chance to go to Heaven.

This comment shows how really stupid Kathy is. With the millions of Christian consumers, no director in his right mind would hire her now. Let's just see what happens to her. Either Jesus will punish her or Hollywood will persecute her. Either way she loses.

Donohue, the present day inquisitor, would probably have her lips cut off and tongue cut out like they did in the good old days - eh Donohue?

I am not a religious person and I am not tight assed and still think Kathy's comment is completely stupid. Regardless of Jesus being the center of the controversy here, I don't see the humor in the comment at all. Maybe one of you highly intelligent people that think she is "SO FUCKING FUNNY" wouldn't mind explaining what the hell is so funny about it. The comment, in my opinion, seems like an attack on the award recipients who chose to include Jesus in their acceptance speech. She belongs on the D-list, low on the D-list.

That's not funny. I wish her the best because having an emmy award as a god is sure to bring her down.

Get a life Kathy!

I'm sorry, I thought funny actually mean't making a joke. I am the first to say that pushing the envelope and to say something offensive can be funny, but to say something offensive just to say it with no punchline.... I still don't get what is so funny about that. (again my opinion) I guess I just like a little intelligence in my humor....thanks for clarifying why people like her.... Duh!

I fail to see ANYTHING funny about what she said. I'd like to slap her but the right thing to do is pray for her, and that He will be glorified through this incident. It amazes me how many of you are supporting her. God loves us and forgives all when we ask Him into our hearts, but it takes a lot of nerve to say sommething like Kathy said.

How sad that someone thinks so highly of themselves, that they can curse their own Creator. Many entertainers in the past, have risen to fame and fallen to the pits. But by the grace of God, through the death of His Son, Jesus, will the fallen be able to receive forgiveness and a hope of eternity. Prayers, sorrow, sadness, & love, not judgment, will be on my heart for Cathy...

I can't not believe some of the comments I'm reading. You people find it funny what kathy said about the Lord? You can't tell that Satan has really been at work. He knows his day is coming soon and is trying to take every one with him. Kathy and every one else that support her are personally buying their ticket to hell as we speak. Heaven help you....I'm too scared to even repeat what she said must less support her.

Cathy, has she gone nut...and her numerous supporters too? It baffles me the kind of reactions and comments I read about her ignoble statement. My heart is seriously bleeding for Cathy and her insane comment. There is need for her to go for psychiatric test to determine are mental status….so that she can be put at her rightful place; otherwise she may cause more havoc in future
