2008 Slog Poll Re-Do: Black Male President or White Female President?
posted by September 21 at 10:33 AM
onThere was no end to the criticism of this poll last month, in which I asked whether you all thought America was more ready for a woman president or a black president.
Commenters pounced:
black male? A black president could mean a black female which would skew the results (I think) of your question.Posted by clarify, please | August 22, 2007 11:03 AM
And…
Sheesh! I’m with clarify, please… We are talking about a black MAN president and a WHITE woman president, right. The question assumes that all Black people are men and all women are white. I am so fucking over that shit!!! Yes, the media is filled with “are we ready for a black or a woman.” NEWSFLASH: I am a BLACK WOMAN. Yeah, we do exist.Posted by Papayas | August 22, 2007 11:11 AM
Point well taken. Today we’re re-doing that poll, posing the question this way:
Given the potentially history-making candidacies of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, there’s a lot of talk in Democratic circles these days about what type of leader this country is “ready for.” Do you think America is more ready for a white female president or a black male president?
Poll closes at 5 p.m.

This is so fucking racist it makes me want to puke.
sexist too
i'm not sure how exactly, but i'm pretty sure it's homophobic, too. i'll get back to you when i figure out why.
america is less afraid of a white woman.
although they should be running to obama because he'll end the war, whereas they're still be troops there in 2012 if hildog wins.
pretty sure it discriminates against straight people too
That we're asking this question at all is probably evidence that we're ready for neither.
We're just ready for any president who is not a fucking idiot.
Can you poll us next on whether we think we're qualified to judge what America is or is not ready for?
Women have been oppressed in almost every culture since the invention of the alphabet. I think it's a boon for the world if a woman—any woman—were to be elected president of the united states.
eli, this poll is dubious at best, especially since you aren't really asking "america", but the subset of the cloistered residents of the liberal bubble of seattle who actually visit "slog" regularly. and, in my opinion america is ready for whoever is not a complete moron, can talk their way through a complete sentance and presents a realistic plan for withdrawing from iraq in a timely and responsible manner, whether that person is woman, black, gay, martian or whatever.
@10 - agreed, as long as that person isn't an atheist.
Considering that black men got the vote over 50 years before women of any ethnicity, the fact that black men get to go to a higher level of heaven than women, that Seattle had a black mayor fairly recently but hasn't had a woman in 80 years, etc., I'd say that black men's status as men usually trumps white women's status as white. Sadly women of color ain't even in the poll or on the radar.
In the particular case of Obama vs. H. Clinton, I am for Obama, but I fear he is too non-Big Mac-eating, non-NASCAR-watching, non-Bud Lite-swilling, and way too arugula-munching, NPR-listening, Pinot Grigio-sipping for most of America. Sigh. Maybe if Denzel ran . . .
Ooops--a higher level of heaven in the LDS church, that is. I know Mormons aren't a majority, but if an organization as racist as that one has been historically can still find a better place for black men than white women, that says a lot about where we are on racism and sexism in America to me.
Also, it's severely anti-dentite.
@9
Any woman? That's a bold statement.
@12, you forgot about the US military. Black men were judged "fit" for combat positions before women.
Please stop with these 'unscientific' polls, which are later used in print as 'unscientific' proof of popularity. It's disinformation. Polls are scientific for a reason. (Doesn't science matter?)
Spend some money on a proper poll, please so we can get some real information.
Whichever would have the issue of going to war with Iran to deal with if numbnutz doesn't before he leaves.
PEOPLE, no matter who gets elected we are NOT LEAVING IRAQ!!! Stop falling for the shit heads who say we are leaving. WE ARE NOT. We are building a fucking embassy BIGGER THAN THE VATICAN in Iraq. We are NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!!
Enjoy our 50 year Middle East meat grinder.
I think we should install millions of cameras and pull out. It would make for a great reality TV show. We'll call it Look what we did!, or something.
i'm with #17 - please refrain from asking questions that stir discussion and debate, unless they are sufficiently financed such that we may call them "scientific". especially if those questions are racist, sexist, or ambiguously homophobic.
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but if we elected Michael Jackson we could have a black man and a white woman.
I tried to vote for mixed-race American, since most of us here can check more than one box on the census form, but it wouldn't let me.
This poll is anti-Semitic.
