Dept. of Corrections

posted by on July 26 at 18:17 PM

An avid reader pointed out that the hole in the ground by Mike’s Chili Parlor in Ballard is not, contrary to what it says in my Frito pie roundup in this week’s paper, a Mars Hill Church expansion, but rather a mixed-use development that will include a Trader Joe’s. We regret the error, and appreciate the readership!

Mars Hill Church expansion vs. mixed use development with a TJ's is a pretty sharp discrepancy. It begs the question, where did the Mars Hill story come from, and how did it manage to be credible enough to go in the paper?

I'm not interested in a blame-fest, just genuinely curious how the wheels turned in this case.

You know, it would be helpful if you'd actually correct the article and noted the correction at the bottom, like, you know, newspapers do.

At least ones not run by the Blethens do, since the SeaTimes never, never makes a mistake.

Naw, don't correct anything.

It would put a blight on your perfect record of getting things completely and totally wrong.

Hey folks, calm down! The stranger is immune from normal journalistic niceties.

The Stranger does "advocacy journalism" and so it doesn't need to make "corrections." The Stranger is _advocating_ so is exempt from the responsibility to be accurate.

In all seriousness, this claim of immunity from reality was offered to me by The Stranger -- I recollect it was Savage in an email --by way of explaining why it was totally ignoring "the Retrofit" of the Viaduct, (which is apparently the approach finally chosen by the State.)

Facts which do not fit with advocacy journalism do not exist because advocating the right things offers by itself an "immunity from reality." Sounds like GW Bush, no?

You guys will be eating crow when next week's issue will have, gasp, a correction.

Has anyone at the Stranger noticed that Mars Hill now has a building in Belltown that has a nice big sign on it proclaiming "Mars Hill Graduate School" or something like that?

What the hell?
