City Get a Haircut
posted by June 29 at 10:00 AM
onThe last two haircuts I got at Rudy’s weren’t even worth the $17 I paid for them. Both times I was given an assembly line, cookie-cutter cut—the first by a stoned-looking stylist—that weren’t even close to what I asked for.
The guy I used to go to in San Francisco recommended Rudy’s, so I figured I’d start there, but no way am I going back a third time. I’m OK with paying more for a better cut. So I ask: Where can a guy go in Seattle—preferably around Cap Hill—for a good men’s haircut for around $30?

Rudy's blows. They act like they're listening to what you're asking for, then bam, buzzcut.
all i know is i hate getting my hair cut period. its so expensive for me, a female, to get a basic trim. i don't want any fancy fucking emo type hair cut. i just don't want to have my hair so fucking long.
oh and my bad experience was at vain. fucking guy didn't listen to what i wanted and ended up cutting my hair WAY too short. oh and talk about over priced jesus christ.
Go to Liana's on Olive near the Police Station. It is an inexpensive haircut and I have always thought a good basic cut. Ask for Liana or her sister Nancy.
And yeah, Rudy's I have not been at for years since the one really good guy who cut hair (Brian) left awhile back. The other "stylists" would be better off trimming hedges or trees.
The Cap Hill Rudy's is and always has been pretty awful. The Phinney Ridge outlet is much better.
If you are looking for a quality haircut on the Hill I would go to Zero-Zero, they are reasonable ($25ish). I especially like Desiree, but everyone there is great.
I go to Jim's Barber Shop on 15th East across the street from On 15th Video; his son Tim is the barber. Haircut: $13.
It's kinda dirty, what with Playboys and Popular Mechanics and such all over the place plus NASCAR on TV, but it's also charmingly unpretentious, affordable and Tim's a super nice guy.
This is a real Barber Shop, though. It's not for you if you want your hair washed, styled and gelled, 'cause Tim don't play that.
I agree. I like to get my bangs cut really short so that I don't have to get a haircut that often. So I specifically asked to have them cut short and said I didn't mind if they were really really short.
I guess this guy made an artistic decision and after he finished up he admitted that he did not cut my bangs short like i asked. Merely one month later, I needed another haircut. So I just cut my bangs myself.
It's not like I asked for a mullet.
Rudy's in Fremont set me up brilliantly last time. The ladies were super-nice, 5 minute waittime. In reality, I'm a Super-Cuts kind of guy, although my best haircuts have been done by women friends for free. And then there was the mohawk done by my buddy. Actually, a woman in Skyway next to the bar I go to is really good, but ever since the one time she cut my hair, she's slowly become more distant when I see her on Karaoke nights. I guess trying to talk down the $25 price was a cosmetology faux-pas.
I've had nothing but good haircuts from the U District Rudy's, but there have been some weak ones from the Fremont and Capitol Hill shops.
Try City Hair. Cuts start at $35. They're all about the stylish and affordable do.
Zero Zero was fabulous! For a mid-length female haircut, nothing fancy just a trim and a bit of layering, it was $27 w/ tip. He totaly listened to what I wanted (I know my hair and what looks good) and 3 months later, my hair is still looking fab! I'll be going back next month for another haircut. More info at about Zero Zero at http://www.myspace.com/zerozero
i stopped that drama when my sister when to beauty school. now i have someone in the family that cuts me hair whenever, however, and for super cheap.
but, due to horrifying hair experiences long before this i am now afraid to move too many cities away from my sister.
zero zero on summit at pine... always do a stellar job.
Just get Josh Feit to shave your head.
Spin's in Wallingford is the shit, and Spin is a cool guy.
4501 Interlake Ave N • Seattle, Washington 98103 • (206) 547-9667
Zero Zero is the only answer!
Capitol Hill Hair on 19th & Republican has always been awesome.
I avoid Rudy's like the plague after a friend went to get a haircut advertised for $15 (approx), and then was charged $90+, then told that that was the correct price, then evil-eyed when he didn't tip.
Try Scream. Not the best, but better than Rudy's.
Just go to Hairmasters. $16 for a cut and wash, and they do your hair to order.
last time i went to rudy's the stylist was more interested in talking to her junkies than cutting my hair. i wound up looking like a cop.
that was 8 (?) years ago.
I love Zero Zero.
Acme Barber Shop, corner of Denny and Bellevue Ave.
I quit Rudy's when I finally had enough. Everytime I went they skipped my name for people who showed up and wrote their name AFTER me. Then to appease me they always rushed through my haircut and it ended up sucking. Bullplop!
So I went to Zero Zero for a while and they were super nice but sadly the haircuts weren't.
I now go to Nucleus. It's right behind the Olive Way Starbucks on Summit Ave. They rock!

Scream just off broadway on Thomas - way better than Rudy's and fun to visit. I've been getting my hair cut and bleached there for years.
Another vote for Liana's. Though they've recently gotten 2 new stylists, and one of them isn't that great (forgot her name though). Anyway, just ask for Nancy or Liana (I prefer Nancy). A simple men's haircut is something like $14.
i cut my own. it's really very easy, especially if you are just doing short. i can even add different lengths now.
Rudy's sucks! Never again you bastards!
The best haircut in town is on Rainier Avenue, on the corner just north of the Safeway. A little barber shop owned by 3 Chinese women who speak broken Engrish, wear leather miniskirts, and only charge $10 for a damn good haircut. Recommended!
I've heard only good things about Zero Zero, but never been there. As far as Rudy's goes, Jonathan, it is hit or miss, but my roommate, Kelli, works in the Belltown one and she is AWESOME. Go to her! Seriously. She's there Thursday through Monday. Also, @16. $90?!?!? I think you got some incorrect information there.
Is anyone from Rudy's listening?
The best haircut for the money is Helmet Head in Georgetown. Relax with a scalp massage and a PBR! I still go there after moving to Capitol Hill.
I second the Spins recommendation, my husband goes there. Yeah, it's not CapHill but his cuts are always awesome and the man has some of the best taste in music in this town. Worth the trip and the extra 10 spot.
I gave up on Rudy's when they gave me a she-mullet a week before I moved to San Francisco in 1996. I simply could never forgive them.
I've been one for two at Spins. First time was great, second time was awful -- and it was the same guy who ruined me at Lucky Seven around the corner.
Now I bite the bullet and pay the nice lady at the fancy salon $50, because she does a great job. I don't want a buzzcut anymore.
Though I'm about a month overdue right now and if you saw my hair right now you'd run away from my stylist (and from me). So I won't tell you her name.
@27-- it was at the Bellevue one, and I saw his reciept. $91 for a cut.
I also endorse Zero Zero. Ask for Todd, the owner. Word is the others are good too, but Todd is good, and since he owns the place, he won't be leaving in 2 months.
I've had good luck at The Luck 7 in Wallingford, but since I just basically ask for them to cut it all off, it's kind of moot.
One more vote for Zero Zero--ask for Julea and ask her questions about the lives of eccentric mathematicians. She gave me my last cut and it still makes me fricken' happy.
One vote for Patricia at Folicle (the space next to the new Walgreen's on Broadway). Patricia is very chill, takes her time to get it right, and listens well (she also speaks Spanish). Your cut may also end with a neck massage if you tip well and there's no one waiting...
If you're out in Ballard, Baba Louise on NW 65th is the way to go. I drive there from West Seattle for my cuts - it's that good!
Rudy's on the Hill and in the U-District are totally inconsistent. I've gotten haircuts at both that I took pictures of so they could be reproduced in the future, and haircuts so bad I made them buzz it off and left no tip.
Zero Zero is consistently good.
Try Clean Cut Barber Shop, 221 James St,
downtown and ask for Miguel. The shop looks like it's been there for 100 years.
Sal's ain't bad. when they're open. i really like Clean Cut on 3rd & James(or is it Cherry?)...those cats always hook it up. good convo in there too.
but riddle me this- why are so-called hiphop barbershops the only place you can get a fade that doesn't make you look like billy blanks? why aren't white barbers required to learn how to do a decent fade? it's only been in style for 20 years.
Paul at Pandemos as been cutting my hair for 10+ years now, doing different styles as the times have changed. No complaints and a good price.

Folio on 45th in Wallingford. It's not Cap Hill, but Todd is great.
Lucky 7 in Wallingford. Definitely. Ask for Yvonne.
These all sound like fine suggestions if you want a basic cut on the cheap. For around $40-45 bucks though, you can get a wash, cut, and style at Salon Moxi on Pine & 13th (next to Bootyland). All three ladies there are super cool and friendly and do a great job in a relaxing setting. It's a little more than what you were looking to spend, but it does include a FREE maintenance cut!

leave the ghetto. go to Helmet Head in Georgetown. Ask for Heather. $20, and then you can eat at Calamity Jane's of Georgetown Liquor Company.
Another vote for Spin's in Wallingford. Spin, Jordan, Aaron, and Monica (hoping I remembered that one!) all do a great cut, and are all cool to talk to. They work on appointments mostly, but it's pretty easy to get in. You'll be glad you went. Try it.

We love Kelli!! I agree with Callie @ 27. Unfortunately, she isn't at the Capitol Hill Rudy's, but it's worth it!! I really don't think it's a matter of WHERE you go, but who you go to. I have found my hair stylist, you just need to find yours. Then you can follow them around if they move salons. Good luck on finding someone and if you feel like making the "trip", go see Kelli at the Belltown Rudy's!!
Second Fnarf and defman: Spend 50 bucks on someone that turns your crank. It's like therapy.
ace barber shop on broadway off john/olive. they gave me the "king of all cosmos" beard from katamari damacy and didn't complain. even when i don't ask them to do stupid shit they are great.
$50 for a haircut? Would rather spend that dosh on a nice deep tissue massage and get the $15 Great Clips special..
another vote for Liana's.
I second/third/etc... all the people who mentioned Zero-Zero, but would like to pimp out my stylist Henry. He gives a great cut and is a great guy.
could not be happier - Liana's is THE place - reasonable, friendly and good, cut and beard trim for 20.00 - terrific cut
what a crock of baloney, the 50.00 cut --- WOW ---- yes shearing sheep of their bucks
I love Scream on Capitol Hill. Been going there for ages now and I am always happy with the cut and colors I get there for more than a reasonable price!

Jesus christ, people, if all a guy needs is a haircut, then why would he pay that much?! 50, 70, 90 dollars?! For a haircut?!
Hipsters are stupid with their money, absolutely brain dead retarded STUPID.
Seriously, guys, you're not losing that much getting it done at Great Clips, Supercuts or Hairmasters for $15-20. Spare the hipster joints that start at $30-50 your business. They probably don't need it ;P
Gomez, if they didn't need it....
Ok, if you're a once-every-4 to 6-weeks guy, you keep it trim and no one ever actually notices that you get a hair cut, sure, go somewhere cheaper if you want, save some dough; they're basically just cutting it back into an already-visible style. Sort of dumb, in fact, to go to a salon that often. Unless that's no problem to your paycheck, I guess.
Me, on the other hand, I go once every 6 months or something like that. I look like a Jesus Freak (with hat-head) at that point, so spending 50 bucks to get gondola'd through the whole deforestation process by the same someone that's happy to see me again is calming to me, as well as a wash to the above.
Now, getting your hair cut every every six months at Great Clips, now that's worthy of establishing an additional savings account for.
Just don't go to JC Penney! My mom took me there to get a perm when I was 17 and my luxurious auburn hair fell out leaving me with mousy brown crap and an ever expanding bald spot (which is why I always get a $10 buzz cut).
Rudy's is ridiculously inconsistent. If you've been more than once, you've gotten a horrible 5 minute cut by somebody who just broke with her girlfriend.
It's not a matter of location, it's a matter of the person you get there. That said, Paulette @ Rudy's in Belltown is great, although she's the only person I've met who's a little hot for Jeremy Piven. Make sure you tell her what's happening on Entourage b/c she's keeping via DVD.
Lewis at the U-District Rudy's cuts a fine head of hair. Best I have found in this city.
Other notables, both on top of Queen Anne:
Chad at Oslo's ($20 - includes a wash),
The Bostonian ($10).
Been going to Rudy's for over 6 years. No problems yet. If you get someone you like, stick to that person. That's all there is to it. Put your name on the list specifically for that stylist.
I've never been charged extra without being told first. This only happened two times.
What the hell do you guys do to have all these hilariously awful experiences there, anyway? Maybe if you told them "Fuck you, cut my hair right or ELSE!" then maybe I can understand the results you guys are reporting.
I think I would have seen someone freaking out at Rudy's over a bad cut after six years if the place didn't have a good reputation, but it hasn't happened yet. And the wait times continue to increase.
wow, awesome to see so many responses here!
seems like zero zero gets the most recommendations, and lianas comes in second. im gonna go w zero zero. ill let you guys know how it goes.
thanks for all your suggestions! go slog!
Acme (Bellvue and Denny) . Great stylists, great music, great hairdo. I highly recomend it.
Ace on Broadway and John. Same price as Rudies, but they rock.
Hairmasters is closed, Gomez.
hey, so sorry about any bad experiences at any of the rudy's. thanks to 60, 48, and 27 for the love. and if you read them, note they are all at the belltown location. so come down and check us out. and if you are unhappy with your service or haircut you do have a week to go to any location to get it fixed for FREE!so if that's the case then please speak up, we are more then happy to help in anyway.
kelli @ belltown
Thanks for the comment! Nucleus is locally owned and operated, there's no turn over of people here, we all do a great job ! Nathan, Julie, Will and now welcoming Julea!
