Slog - Comments on Get a Haircut

The last two haircuts I got at Rudy's weren't even worth the $17 I paid for them. Both times I was given an assembly line, cookie-cutter cut--the first by a stoned-looking stylist--that weren't even close to what I asked for. The guy I used to go to in San Francisco recommended Rudy's, so I figured I'd start there, but no way am I going back a third time. I'm OK with paying more for a better cut. So I ask: Where can a guy go in Seattle--preferably around Cap Hill--for a good men's haircut for around $30?...

all i know is i hate getting my hair cut period. its so expensive for me, a female, to get a basic trim. i don't want any fancy fucking emo type hair cut. i just don't want to have my hair so fucking long.

oh and my bad experience was at vain. fucking guy didn't listen to what i wanted and ended up cutting my hair WAY too short. oh and talk about over priced jesus christ.

Go to Liana's on Olive near the Police Station. It is an inexpensive haircut and I have always thought a good basic cut. Ask for Liana or her sister Nancy.

And yeah, Rudy's I have not been at for years since the one really good guy who cut hair (Brian) left awhile back. The other "stylists" would be better off trimming hedges or trees.

The Cap Hill Rudy's is and always has been pretty awful. The Phinney Ridge outlet is much better.

If you are looking for a quality haircut on the Hill I would go to Zero-Zero, they are reasonable ($25ish). I especially like Desiree, but everyone there is great.

I go to Jim's Barber Shop on 15th East across the street from On 15th Video; his son Tim is the barber. Haircut: $13.

It's kinda dirty, what with Playboys and Popular Mechanics and such all over the place plus NASCAR on TV, but it's also charmingly unpretentious, affordable and Tim's a super nice guy.

This is a real Barber Shop, though. It's not for you if you want your hair washed, styled and gelled, 'cause Tim don't play that.

I agree. I like to get my bangs cut really short so that I don't have to get a haircut that often. So I specifically asked to have them cut short and said I didn't mind if they were really really short.

I guess this guy made an artistic decision and after he finished up he admitted that he did not cut my bangs short like i asked. Merely one month later, I needed another haircut. So I just cut my bangs myself.

It's not like I asked for a mullet.

Rudy's in Fremont set me up brilliantly last time. The ladies were super-nice, 5 minute waittime. In reality, I'm a Super-Cuts kind of guy, although my best haircuts have been done by women friends for free. And then there was the mohawk done by my buddy. Actually, a woman in Skyway next to the bar I go to is really good, but ever since the one time she cut my hair, she's slowly become more distant when I see her on Karaoke nights. I guess trying to talk down the $25 price was a cosmetology faux-pas.

These all sound like fine suggestions if you want a basic cut on the cheap. For around $40-45 bucks though, you can get a wash, cut, and style at Salon Moxi on Pine & 13th (next to Bootyland). All three ladies there are super cool and friendly and do a great job in a relaxing setting. It's a little more than what you were looking to spend, but it does include a FREE maintenance cut!
I really don't think it's a matter of WHERE you go, but who you go to. I have found my hair stylist, you just need to find yours. Then you can follow them around if they move salons.

Gomez, if they didn't need it....

Ok, if you're a once-every-4 to 6-weeks guy, you keep it trim and no one ever actually notices that you get a hair cut, sure, go somewhere cheaper if you want, save some dough; they're basically just cutting it back into an already-visible style. Sort of dumb, in fact, to go to a salon that often. Unless that's no problem to your paycheck, I guess.

Me, on the other hand, I go once every 6 months or something like that. I look like a Jesus Freak (with hat-head) at that point, so spending 50 bucks to get gondola'd through the whole deforestation process by the same someone that's happy to see me again is calming to me, as well as a wash to the above.

Now, getting your hair cut every every six months at Great Clips, now that's worthy of establishing an additional savings account for.

Rudy's is ridiculously inconsistent. If you've been more than once, you've gotten a horrible 5 minute cut by somebody who just broke with her girlfriend.

It's not a matter of location, it's a matter of the person you get there. That said, Paulette @ Rudy's in Belltown is great, although she's the only person I've met who's a little hot for Jeremy Piven.

Been going to Rudy's for over 6 years. No problems yet. If you get someone you like, stick to that person. That's all there is to it. Put your name on the list specifically for that stylist.

I've never been charged extra without being told first. This only happened two times.

What the hell do you guys do to have all these hilariously awful experiences there, anyway? Maybe if you told them "Fuck you, cut my hair right or ELSE!" then maybe I can understand the results you guys are reporting.

I think I would have seen someone freaking out at Rudy's over a bad cut after six years if the place didn't have a good reputation, but it hasn't happened yet. And the wait times continue to increase.
