Fearless Leader

posted by on June 3 at 17:45 PM

If he wasn’t already, Dan is now an honorary Jew. I mean, look at that ‘fro!

High school is hard on all of us.

oh damn. dan looked kinda hot in high school, if a little crabby. in a sort of '70s-disco-italian-i-am-hiding-my-lunch-in-my-hair kind of way.

This explains the big hair fetish.

Did you see how HOT christine gregoire was? It still shows, but wow. and tim eyman looked (looks) like a fool.

Posted by Cook | June 3, 2007 6:39 PM

What does the button say that he's wearing?

Posted by Prospero | June 3, 2007 6:49 PM

So i know this is an obvious question, but uhhh what were you thinking?!

Posted by brandon h | June 3, 2007 7:16 PM

Why was there ever an afro fad?

Posted by raindrop | June 3, 2007 7:25 PM

This wouldn't have happened if he had attended a public school.

"Why was there ever an afro fad?"

Well it looked alright on black guys. And you can't knock the Jew Fro.

Posted by Jay | June 3, 2007 8:46 PM

The rise of conditioners probably didn't help the white man's fro movement.

Posted by Jay | June 3, 2007 8:48 PM

What was I thinking? "I don't look gay with my hair like this."

What does the button say? "You are cordially invited to go fuck yourself." My mother wasn't happy.

And... sorry, Do As I Don't, but I went to a public school -- Metro High -- for my junior and senior years of high school. I picked it over my parent's objections.

This of course begs the question...

What would Dan have looked like with a Ponyhawk?

(Oh, and I looked just as dorky and had even longer hair in high school. At the time, very few guys had hair shorter than shoulder length. Yay 1980!)

Me: guess who this picture is of?

Girlfriend: Sammy Hagar

Me: actually it's Dan Savage in high school

Girlfriend: I swear Sammy Hagar had that exact same hair.

Now we know why he was such a fan of Sanjaya.

I think it's telling that Tim Eyman had fangs in high school.

As far as Dan's hair-- I had a mullet my last two years of high school, so I can't exactly go casting stones.

Seriously though Dan, you've clearly got a MOT in the woodpile, brah.

"You are cordially invited to go fuck yourself"
I love the stupid stuff we do in high school! Always a rebel, Dan. I like it.

Posted by Jamey | June 4, 2007 10:00 AM

If that's his high-school photo, there's no use in Dan telling *anyone* that he's less than 50.

Posted by NapoleonXIV | June 4, 2007 10:16 AM

In 82 I got a perm in hopes of having a fro like Dan's and two weeks later most of my hair fell out. I've been pretty bald ever since.

Posted by elswinger | June 4, 2007 10:41 AM

@ 17: The article says he graduated in 1982, or 25 years ago. Most kids are 18 when they graduate, placing him at roughly 43. I'm sure his real age is readily available to anyone that cares - why would he have to tell someone he was under 50?

Posted by Aislinn | June 4, 2007 11:48 AM

Were this photo not taken 6 years before my birth, I'd totally have hit on you Dan. ;)

Posted by Me | June 4, 2007 1:31 PM

#19: The graduation date may be 1982, but the fashion sense screams 1973.

Just sayin'

Posted by NapoleonXIV | June 4, 2007 2:17 PM

In the late 1970s they brought back Selective Service registration -- they being Jimmy Carter. Some of us went all retro-hippy in protest.

Posted by Dan Savage | June 4, 2007 2:30 PM

That is cold, I'd so be pissed if someone dug up my yearbook photos and put them on the internet.
Better than one of my mug shots though! LOL

Posted by K X One | June 4, 2007 2:57 PM

I graduated in 1983, and there were definitely people in my high school who looked like this.

Posted by litlnemo | June 4, 2007 10:11 PM

as a fellow 1982 high school grad I can attest that the fro was a popular hair choice in the have to remember that 'flyover' country is 3 to 5 years behind the coasts...these were leftover Brady Bunch guy perm styles...

Posted by michael strangeways | June 5, 2007 2:48 PM

/boggle I thought Dan was like 30-ish?
