Arts Today the Stranger Suggests

onYard Dogs Road Show and Circus ContraptionCircus Contraption is more cirque noir—a romantically shabby, Euro-bordello feeling, all accordions and tassels and faded red velvet. The Yard Dogs (from San Francisco) are more nü-vaudeville—electric guitars and burlesque dancing and flashy magic tricks. They’ve both got great skills and great bands—seeing them on the same stage will be a sword-swallowing, fire-eating, trapeze-swinging joy. You should un-Suggest this. Circus Contraption was genuinely great as always but the Yard Dogs were boring. We gave their gig about forty minutes and then left. Without the constant fear of death endemic to Circus Contraption's work, the Yard Dogs just behaved like floundering, posturing hipsters.
