The Religious Right’s Candidate

posted by on May 14 at 10:23 AM

Meet former Sen. Fred Thompson, “better than all of the above,” according one social conservative:

Several leading Christian conservatives say they will rally to former Sen. Fred Thompson, who they expect to announce “in a matter of weeks” that he will seek the Republican nomination for president next year.

“It’s not ‘if’ but ‘when,’ he will announce,” one Protestant evangelical leader says of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering for position in the 2008 race.

A prominent Roman Catholic social conservative says the three Republicans who have raised the most money and have led the polls — former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — fall short of social conservatives’ expectations, but Mr. Thompson doesn’t. “He’s right on the issues … He’s better than all of the above.”

Is he pro or anti-Darwin? Hard to keep track of all these America-hating Reds.

Ah geez. I hope NBC or Wolf has a copyright on the sound or we'd hear that "ta ching" L&O sound for a week or so in every other report on his candidacy.

2008 may be the year of the late entries--both Thompson and Gore might just let the rest of their party's candiates spend all their money and bloody each other up in the early primaries, then jump in later in the contest. Remember Bill Clinton was a late entry, skipping Iowa. It's a politically and financially savvy strategy.

Then there's Republican Chuck Hagel making "independent run" noises. We may have our next Ross Perot spoiler. But as an anti-war Republican, would he siphon votes from both sides?

Except for James Dobson:

"Everyone knows he's conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for," Dobson said of Thompson. "[But] I don't think he's a Christian; at least that's my impression," Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

if he enters the race, he'll take it. he can affect folksy charm.

he's an actor, & we want someone to lie to us convincingly.

this country doesn't want to wake up. it wants to sit in it's parents basement all day, napping & doing bong hits.

@ #5

I totally agree. Americans are just fine simply ignoring what is going on around them. We just want our iPods, reality TV shows and all the high frucose corn syrup we can eat.

James Dobson is a dipshit. I don't vote for a candidate thinking about my sexual orientation, I vote thinking about my country. James seems to vote thinking about his religion. Oh yeah, Christians don't want religious freedom in America. That's not moral. We're not moral. Man's ability to reason is not moral.

Pro-family/conservatively moral still doesn't cut it for FOF. You must be a Christian.

Lord I lift yo' name onnnnn hiiiiiighh!!!1!

Did you see Family Guy last night? It was fantastic. Lois runs for mayor and her campaign was going nowhere because she kept trying to give long, wonky answers at public debates.

So she switches course and makes awesome statements like the terrorists are going to assassinate Jesus, and Darth Vader and the Legion of Doom are out to get the public. 9/11, 9/11, 9… 11. The crowd goes nuts and she wins in a landslide.

It was by far the best satire of our sub-moronic voting public ever.

Family Guy is still on? And socially relevant? Interesting.
