The Morning News

posted by on May 3 at 6:41 AM

Just a Damn Minute: When Nancy Pelosi met with the Syrians it was damn near traitorous—we don’t talk to “bad actors,” reward “bad behavior,” the Syrians are bad, bad, bad. So why is Condi Rice meeting with the Syrians today?

Nice President You’ve Got There: GOP ‘08 presidential candidates gather for their first debate tonight. Will they say nice things about the deeply unpopular George W. Bush? Or will they tell the fucking truth?

US Attorneys Scandal: Mistakes were made, Bush and Gonzo conceded. Now it looks like crimes were committed. Go get ‘em, Patrick Leahy.

What Ever Happened to Lon Mabon Anyway? Full domestic partner/civil unions law passes final legislative hurdle—Oregon Senate votes 21-9 in favor—and heads to Oregon governor’s desk along with gay rights bill passed earlier in the session. (Ed? Jamie? Frank? Christine?)

Happy Birthday, Assholes: The very first spam email was sent 29 years ago today.

Closed to Bikes Too? Sinkhole swallows two cars, forces closure of University Bridge until late tonight at least.

Who’s Going to Tell the Kids… a few boring platitudes on their way out the door? UW scrambling to find commencement day speaker.

Transient Stabbed Under Viaduct: This sort of thing never happens on surface boulevards.

U Bridge is open to bikes & peds (though our "local" papers have not reported it).

I'm just waiting for the Cornerites to go ballistic on Rice like they did on Pelosi.

An omission from the morning news: today marks one of the most important elections in recent British history. The Scottish National Party is likely to win in the Scottish Parliament, kicking Blair on his way out the door.

The White House issued a veto threat Thursday against legislation that would expand federal hate crime law to include attacks motivated by the victims' gender or sexual orientation.

the buddhists say that when you feel hate you should wish that person happiness. "may you know happiness".

in chimpy mccokespoon's case, you could say "may you know wisdom", i suppose.

its really frustrating to be a buddhist.

I wasn't around for the ARPANET spam (though I once had an ARPANET-style address on BITNET), but I was around for the real birth of spam-style marketing filth: the infamous green card lawyers Cantor & Siegel, who started the wave that destroyed Usenet. I could happily go Abu Ghraib on those bastards; I'd LOVE to see Cantor & Siegel's lifeless bodies in plastic bags on a cement floor. If I am elected President in 2008, Guantanamo Bay will be converted for the sole purpose of torturing and murdering spammers and their ilk.

Goddamn, I miss pre-spam Usenet. I do remember Cantor & Siegel. But IIRC, you only have to go Abu Ghraib on one, because I think one of them is already dead now.

But spam wasn't the only thing that killed Usenet, I guess -- it was probably the rise of Web-based message boards, which to technophobes are much friendlier than even the simplest Usenet reader. If Google Groups had appeared about 5 years sooner, I suppose it might have helped keep Usenet off life-support (Sure, there was DejaNews, but it was much more annoying). But then again, the spam. And the morons. *sigh*
