History A Critically Ill Attorney General, a Late-Night Showdown in a Dark Hospital Room…

onThe Grilling of Gonzales is bringing out some dramatic stories. From NYT:
On the night of March 10, 2004, a high-ranking Justice Department official rushed to a Washington hospital to prevent two White House aides from taking advantage of the critically ill Attorney General, John Ashcroft, the official testified today. One of those aides was Alberto R. Gonzales, who was then White House counsel and eventually succeeded Mr. Ashcroft as Attorney General.
Those aides wanted Ashcroft, who was “barely aware of his surroundings,” to sign a renewal of a then-secret domestic surveillance program which he had opposed when he was well. The rushing “high-ranking Justice Department official” was James B. Comey, who had been appointed acting Attorney General while Ashcroft was in the hospital.
Comey said Gonzales and the other goon, Andrew H. Card, were in the darkened hospital room, trying to talk Ashcroft into signing the renewal…
“And Attorney General Ashcroft then stunned me,” Mr. Comey went on: He raised his head from the pillow, reiterated his objections to the program, then lay back down, pointing to Mr. Comey as the attorney general during his illness… Mr. Ashcroft had such serious reservations about the program that he considered resigning then, Mr. Comey testified. Instead, he stayed on until November 2004.
Cloak and motherfucking dagger.

and yet it never seems to be enough to get rid of the dirty mother fuckers.
Dirty mothafuckaz! Bwaaaanananananan!!!1!
We must purge our nation of these evildoers who take the name of the Lord in vain, and break God's Commandments against lying.
Truth, Justice, and the American Middle Class Way of Life ...
So do you think Gonzales is just fucking with us now? Obviously there is nothing, literally nothing, that he could do that would get him fired. I think he could pull out a gun and shoot a random pedestrian near the White House, and just laugh... and nothing would happen to him.
Boy, you know things are bad when John Fucking Ashcroft looks like the good guy.
Alberto G is Rove's only protection. He won't be going anywhere unless he's impeached and how long will that take? Think they could have it done by January 2009? That'd be a big fat no.
Holy crap! I've stopped giving this administration the benefit of the doubt; this solidifies it. Bush has set back the GOP probably as much as Richard Nixon.
My thoughts exactly Matthew. Ted Olson comes off looking good too.
I think it's worse than Nixon. Nixon never lost the armed forces, and he didn't fuck up the Justice Department as badly. Note that I don't give a crap about the GOP; I'm talking about damage to the United States.
iaw5.
Wow. The only thing missing was the severed horse head.
As much as I would hope that this would have a lasting impact it won't. Nixon's shenanigans weren't nearly as bad as the Iran/Contra scandal. That scandal had more GOP blood on it than a tampon from Laura Bush. And yet, Bush Sr. got elected. Regan suffered no long term public effects, and the GOP took control of congress in the 90's.
Yeah, I doubt this will have the lasting impact that it should. Sad for sure, but the American populace is sleeping throught this.
How surreal to be longing for the days of the Ashcroft led DOJ, his clownish crooning of his Let the Eagle Soar song and covering up the nudey lady justice statue in the DOJ lobby in the name of decency. Where have you gone Johnny Ashcroft, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, ooh ooh ooh...
Should we actually survive long enough, its gonna make a helluva movie for us to watch. I suppose Pacino, after playing the Devil AND Roy Cohn, will play Ashcroft...
If he could have run for a third term (and not been impeached) Nixon probably would have legalized pot.
You know, this story has me pining for the days of old school conservatives like Ashcroft, Bush Sr., Bob Dole, and Reagan. As much as I disliked them, at least they had enough respect for the country not to flush it and its constitution down the toilet.
Let's be clear. Aside from the drama of this story, Comey has testified that the President knowingly and intentionally authorized an illegal program to continue for some period of time after the Attormey General determined that there was no legal basis for the program. If we are talking about the NSA wiretapping program, it means that the President intentionally and knowingly committed multiple felonies in doing so.
These are plainly impeachable offenses.
