Letter of the Day

posted by on March 13 at 16:44 PM

As an employee of a major bookstore chain, I’d like to say Paul Constant’s article on The Secret was phenomenally refreshing. For the past few weeks, I’ve forced a big happy smile as customer after customer has requested a copy of it. The Secret came out around the same time as the Harry Potter 7 pre-order, and to my dismay, even the expected frenzy over that pales in comparison to sales for this crap. It is a Frankenstein’s monster of every gimmicky book product that the average customer seems to like: A self-help book, get-rich-quick scheme, and religious makeover all in one, it’s like the PERFECT STORM. What is most disturbing to me is that even in a city as seemingly intelligent as Seattle, the average citizen seems to have disabled their bullshit alarm in favor of feelgoodery. It’s not just glassy-eyed new-agers coming in for this product, it’s normal people, and that’s scary. I don’t know about the power of the law of attraction, but I now firmly believe in marketing’s power to trump the laws of reason.

God damn hippy new age bullshit. I lump the Secret in with all the nitwits who believe that positive thinking, consciousness, and fucking puppets will end the war. And I include the idiots who thing barricading a port is a useful protest and not worthy of a good tear gassing.

Yeah. Too bad that Constant's piece was a pathetic also-ran from a much better article at Salon.com from a couple of weeks ago.

I haven't read it yet but I will say that I have seen a positive change in my mother since she started reading it. She's much more positive and happy about things. Maybe she's a lemming but she's a happy lemming which works for me!

Better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied, motherfuckers.

This book is absolute bullshit.

I cant wait to read it just so I can sound knowledgable when I post here. Chances are there are lots of people who will have their lives enriched by reading those words, look around you there are millions who do no self evaluating and are comfortable being a victim and letting life wash over them. If your not one of those people, meaning you've actually figured out the key to happines in an over crowded and polluted environment, ran by asshats the world round then GOOD FOR YOU! Let us here your answers and stand prepared for the judgement.
All the rest of you that haven't read it sound bitter, resentful and ignorant. If you can post something useful about the topic of how to get along with this many people at once in such a limited amount of space then lets here THAT instead of a bunch of opinions based on what their "mothers" take of it is, At least identify yourself as having actually read it or not so that I know who to dismiss as being ignorant instead of just being shitty.
I happen to think that pop culture goes out of its way to bombard us with negative, self destructive drivel that encourages people to give up and hide from one and other and frankly its a refreshing breath of sunshine up my pant leg when someone crys out against the din.
Not to say this book isn't likely to be another shovel full...after all it was recommended from the largest blow hard on day time tv....Im just sayin the world is already full of a bunch of people passin judgements on others based on a book they havent read. Lets try to evolve already.
