Manning’s In

posted by on March 28 at 19:03 PM

John Manning (previous coverage here, here, here, and here, for those who don’t remember who he is) is in the running for the seat Peter Steinbrueck is vacating this year. (My story about the other two contenders, Bruce Harrell and Venus Velazquez, is here.)

Well, someone has to cater to the batshit crazy vote.

Erica - the title of this item, Boy, is surely a slip up, but quite racist to many.

Manning is not Boy. Ex-cop black guy, sure.

Yes, flawed wife beater, and a dead duck in all politics, but not Boy.

What's with the racist condescension in the title? Fuck Erica C Barnett.

Posted by mulwena | March 28, 2007 7:54 PM

Whoa. Calm down. "Boy" doesn't refer to Manning. "Hoo, boy" was my reaction when I heard the news, and is something I say a lot. Manning's race did not occur to me in any way when I wrote the title.

Barnett isn't calling Manning a "Boy." She's saying "Hoo, boy" ... an expression that means ... I don't know: "oy vey" or "wow" or "holy moly" ...

It's obviously her reaction to the news that Manning, who has serious controversial baggage, threw his hat in the ring.

My plate's clean how bout yours?

NOTE: I changed the title to avoid the appearance of racial content, though absolutely none was intended.

Wow (or oi vey or hoo boy). Manning, deserves his own example entry under the definition of chutzpah.

Posted by gnossos | March 28, 2007 10:02 PM

"Manning's In" is this a not so subtle reference to his "forced entry" history?

Posted by Freud | March 28, 2007 10:47 PM

i'm glad i'm not a nicely compensated writer for the stranger. a hoo boy title like that from a faux news fire would be heaped with coals. at least ecb responds, albeit her cavalier better than thou fuck all priss way. that other guy, it's senseless in calling him out on his shite. the likely response of substance you'll get {see Patriotism Mar 18 8:01] happens when you stroke his pride by placing your nose inside his anus. he's a big pussy when you challenge him on this f**hag blog. probably a svelte cunt in person. so go on sailors, massage his balls, massage his clit. it'll feeeeeeel good :P

Damn. Only Manning could have lost to Compton after Strippergate. What race will he give to an undeserving incumbent this time?

Frued @ 8 - he wasn't accused of rape - he was convicted of (as I remember it) grabbing and throwing his then-wife across the room or something like that during a fight.

Manning is way delusional to keep running, and domestic violence is hideous, but it's not rape.

Posted by Seasoned Vet | March 28, 2007 11:54 PM

Seasoned Vet:

I was referring to the charge of forced entry. I think it involved a screen door at his then estranged wife's home.

Anything else in your mind. But that is also telling.

Also if you read the post above Manning is running for an "Open Seat" so there is no incumbent.

Tell me. What do you think of when I say "Open Seat"?

When is that guy going to give up?

Posted by keshmeshi | March 29, 2007 12:25 AM

he needs a better paying job

and he is stupid to boot, yes, stupid

Posted by mamma | March 29, 2007 12:42 AM

As I remember, amid charges of spouse abuse, the Stranger endorsed the guy for it out Erica..... not just the pre censored OK stories after his arrest.

Is that a case of getting what one deserves?

Posted by lloyd | March 29, 2007 5:20 AM

"As I remember, amid charges of spouse abuse, the Stranger endorsed the guy for election...."

Indeed, they did, and without that much reluctance. What's with the about-face on the guy?

Posted by tsm | March 29, 2007 9:58 AM

Freud @11 - hilarious BURN on Seasoned Vet @ 10. telling, indeed.

Posted by strangerfan | March 29, 2007 12:09 PM

"About face" to announce that he's running? Calm down.

Posted by ECB | March 29, 2007 12:23 PM

What political cadaver is next? Jesse Wineberry?

Manning has as much chance as me. ZERO.

Here are some people I would like to see run for city council:

Joe Martin
Johny Fox
Sue Taoka
Judy Nicastro's mom
Bob Santos
Cindy Domingo
Heidi Wills
Paula Moran
Sharon Tomiko Santos
James Kelly
Sergio Salinas

As well as more folks from labor and other communities. I dont know any enviros, but maybe some of them.

A mix of centrists and progressives and yes more people of color, if this council was any whiter this city could be mistaken for Portland Maine.

Councilmembers I want to keep:
