Café Presse: YES!

posted by on March 29 at 10:44 AM

Or OUI!, as the case may be. The website for Café Presse—the new place from the people of Le Pichet that will open on 12th just south of Madison in June (which means July or August or maybe even September)—is up, including the insanely reasonably priced menu. Can something be insanely reasonable? In a world gone mad… Bibb lettuce salad with hazelnut vinaigrette, $4; croque monsieur, $5.50; steak tartare with pommes frites and watercress salad, $16; Pichet’s famous roasted chicken for two, $26; et cetera. HOUSE-MADE PASTRIES. With a NEWSSTAND. And A BAR. In which they’re going to show SOCCER GAMES. FREAK the fuck OUT.

Wow, right up the street from Lark and Licorous - another great place for drinks & snacks before going to see a show at the Empty Spa -

- oh, fuck.

Yeah, but will they make custom t-shirts?

I remember the good old days, when 12 and Madison was a bunch of gay bars and the Stranger was an alternative newspaper.

so pretentious and annoying. the only place restaurants should be calling fries "pommes" is in europe... unless presse wants to write the entire menu in french. cherry picking certain foods to translate 'for emphasis' or whatever is just fakey and sounds stupid.

@6: The whole menu's in French. And it sounds great!

Do you have the address of their location? I live a block from there, walk on 12th all the time, and can't picture what space they'll be in just south of Madison.

Can I live in this place? It sounds perfect.

(BTW, isn't Le Pichet run by actual French people?)

it would sound great if it were all in french! but you know what i mean -- if you're gonna say "fries" in french, why not also say "bibb lettuce salad" in french. it just seems forced. that's all.

It's south of Madison?

I thought it was going to be in that huge new redevelopment on 12th between Madison and Pike across from Stellina and the plumbing place...

oh, I guess that wouldn't work for it to open this summer...that new complex is a year away from being done...

12th is getting to be a very funky street...maybe it'll make up for the destruction of Pine....

Yeah, yeah, ok. I bet it'll be about as pretensious as Le Pichet, which clocks in at zero pretense.

The easy money is that it'll be busy because the food and the service will be quite good.

I really can only think that it's going into the sewing factory building (Trace lofts) when it's done. There's nothing else "just" south of Madison on 12th - you'd have to go farther down.

I would be psyched if it were in Trace, since it would be practically in my backyard.

It will be at 1117 12th Avenue, on the west side of the street just south of that giant storage building on the corner of 12th and Madison. Right now it's a smallish white garage with a construction trailer in front of it. Photo/info here:
