Going to Amsterdam?

posted by on January 2 at 9:26 AM

You’ll have to leave your Segway scooter at home. They’ve banned the idiotic things throughout the Netherlands.

Dutch police banned scooters made by Segway from all public roads, bike paths and walkways in the Netherlands as of Jan. 1, the nation’s official importer confirmed Tuesday. Segway Nederland director Piet Kruijt said the company was “completely ambushed” by the decision, first announced by national police on Nov. 27, 2006.

They're not banning them, they're trying to find a way to license them. It's sort of the opposite.

The Traffic Agency's comment that "they don't have brakes, you lean back to brake them" is dull-headed. Segways slow down and stop; you just lean back; in cars you push your foot down. Splitting this hair reminds me how the Portland police ticket fixed-gear bikes (the ones that connect the pedals direct to the wheel). The police ticket them because "they don't have brakes" even though pushing back on the pedals will slow or stop the bike.

What good are Segway's anyway? Besides proving that someone can come up with mathematical algorithms to guarantee balance on a horizontal axle, they are pretty stupid. If you have two good feet to stand on a Segway, you can frickin' walk, fatass. Deka Designs other product, a funky stair-climbing wheelchair is significantly more useful. Anyway, why waste electricity travelling the streets of Amsterdam in a Segway, when you can bicycle? Sheesh.
