State House Races

posted by on November 7 at 21:29 PM

Dwight Pelz just got up onstage at the Sheraton and announced the results from the state legislative races.

Of 24 Senate races in Olympia, the Democrats are winning in 19.

In the House, of 98 races, Democrats are leading in 63.

Speaking of state houses, is anyone out there in the blogosphere or msm tracking state government races? It could be vitally important for future House races, as it will fall to the State legislatures to handle redistricting. Now that the Republicans and the Supreme Court have set a precedent for redistricting in non-census years (thanks, Tom DeLay!) there is a potential for...well, several electoral shake-ups. If these elections yield Democratic majorities in State legislatures throughout the country, the opportunity arises to potentially cement Democratic gains and create new opportunities to gain seats in the future through redistricting.

Which of course leads to the question, should we? We all thought it was supremely slimy when DeLay directed redistricting in Texas from his office in DC, applauded the ultimately futile efforts of Texas Democrats to avoid quorum and stymie the attempt by fleeing to Oklahoma...should Democrats now turn around and use this tool as part of the electoral process to make gains in the House? Or should Democrats use any gains at the State level to come up with an alternative to the gerrymandering that has marked the redistricting process since the early days of the Republic?

I’d love to see some Slogging about any discussions going on inside the party/parties about this possibility, and of course discussions from Slog readers.
