Swearin’ in a Sister: A Chill in Hell

Condi is serving the gays Goodwill Realness with a Twist:

WASHINGTON — At a State Department ceremony this week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warmly acknowledged the family members of Mark Dybul, whom she was swearing in as the nation’s new global AIDS coordinator.

As first lady Laura Bush looked on, Rice singled out his partner, Jason Claire, and Claire’s mother. Rice referred to her as Dybul’s “mother-in-law.”

A genuine gesture or a tactical grasping at straws? Can the GOP even think on that many levels of deceptive irony? Whatever the motive, on the face of it (where most conservative voters end their intellectual investigation and investment), it is what it is—“a bold gesture in favor of gay marriage,” says AMERICAblog.

I don't see why Condi would have any particular agenda herself with regard to marriage equality; I've never heard that she was one of the shiny-eyed Armageddonist fundy types. However, what IS going to be interesting is to see if Spongedobson and Falwell and the like freak out about it.

Is there any evidence that Condi even knows the difference between mens and womens? I'll bet she was introduced as MIL and Condi didn't even make the connection.

Yeah, Geni. This is exactly what I'm interested in. Weve been reading in the past week how some GOP'rs have secretly been calling Fundies "nuts" and "ridiculous." There seems to be a crack in things ("that's how the light gets in," says Leonard Cohen).

What happens to the political climate when the not-Democrat constituency risks being plainly divided over an issue like this? Will the Fundamentalists and Evangelicals pull up their britches and come along for the gentle lean to the left? or will the party divide? And if the party divides, will it mean an even more decided victory for--well, freedom and progressive ideology in America? or will there be more vocal, virulent and violent fanatacism from the far Right?

I'm happy they are openly hiring an openly gay person (WITH partner...he didn't have his mom swear him in, thank goodness), but I'm a little suspect as to how influential he will be with this administration. I'm also curious about this guy: I assume he knows he has to work for ol'Strategery himself? What made him take this job. He must be the optimist of the century.

There is no gamble here for the administration. This guy is, after all, the global AIDS coordinator, so who is going to be shocked or even give a shit? This is the place where the administration's token gay would obviously be placed, right?

As for "mother-in-law," I'm sure she couldn't think of any other way to describe her in less than 30 words, so she went the easy route, the route most easily understood by those present. I wouldn't ascribe anything else to it.

The last few weeks have really been a revelation. I didn't know that there were so many gay Republicans in positions of power in DC that people in political circles know are gay, but not the public at large. Does that mean they're "openly closeted?" Is that a new term?

Whatever, the point is that there are many gay people working for the Republicans in the administration, Supreme Court and Congress, and most of the R's couldn't care less about their staffers' orientation.

They whip up a frenzy in the most cynical manner possible over gay men and lesbians and dehumanize us because it turns out the assholes that vote for them. Because if there's one thing that conservatives fear more than terrahists, it's sex. S-E-X. Bang-ZOOM. Who wants it, who's talking about it, who's having it, who's covering it up, and of course, who's uncovering it.

Any grad students out there need a thesis topic? How about examining the root causes of a pathological and hysterical fear of sex?

You may think it is a good thing that they have openly hired an openly gay person, but tis is just a type-cast and its puffery. The administration dont want gays or have time for the issue.
