Is Masturbation Considered Abstinence?

posted by on October 31 at 11:57 AM

After I read the previously-mentioned, amazingly bizarre story about how the federal goverment is now trying to make grown people stop having sex, I found this piece by Steven Landsburg in Slate in which he opines that net porn prevents rape. I think calling this “proof” is a bit of a stretch, but it’s interesting, especially from a source like Slate, which I have always felt was sort nanny-state-liberal about icky things like porn. But apparently Dr. Landsburg has a book coming out entitled More Sex is Safer Sex, and Other Surprises, so perhaps he’s ramping up for that…

If you asked Jocelyn Elders, I'll bet she'd say "no."

Is masturbation even really a technically heterosexual act? (Assuming that you are the same gender as you.)

Hetero- = "Other; different"
Homo- = "Same, like"

My hand always wears lipstick and a little skirt I made. So it's more of a tranny thing.

Does that mean I have to consider myself bi-sexual, Diana?

Depends on who is doing the defining. Back when I attended a fairly fundamentalist church, it was assumed that masturbation was a sin; books and discussions centered on how, metaphysically, fantasizing about others was objectifying or fell into the "lust in your heart" category.

Now that I'm a happy little episcopalian, it's not really a topic of conversation... which leads me to figure it's not all that debated. DADT.

Dunno about other religions, tho I suspect the neo-Pagans have no problem with it :)

From a "wait for marriage" (or "until you find someone you'd be willing to have (a) see you naked and (b) have touch you (no, I didn't have a high opinion of many of my fellow high school students, why do you ask?) ...AND you're willing to deal with birth control et cetera") perspective, it doesn't count.
