Cantwell: The Other Woman?

posted by on October 2 at 11:57 AM

A few weeks back I went after Mike McGavick’s closed divorce file. It’s out now, and there’s not a lot in there.

Turnabout is fair play. Stefan, over at Sound Politics, turned up Ron Dotzauer’s divorce file. Cantwell was Dotzauer’s girlfriend in the mid-80s and, according to the file, was an issue in Dotzauer’s divorce.

It’s not scandalous or even terribly important info, but since I made an issue of McGavick’s divorce (well, actually, McGavick made an issue of McGavick’s divorce), it seems like I should link to Stefan’s findings on Cantwell’s past.

I will say this: The press…and Stefan…seem to make a big deal out of a $15K—$50K loan that Cantwell made to Dotzauer…complaining that she helped some of Dotzauer’s clients. (Dotzauer is a lobbyist.) Problem with that is: It’s only a story if Dotzauer loaned Cantwell money…not the other way around. (Dotzauer’s clients were the lefty Cascade Water Alliance and the not so lefty U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Indeed, as the Center for Responsive Politics told The Seattle Times:

It’s an uncommon financial arrangement, said Massie Ritsch, communications director for the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington, D.C.-based watchdog group. But personal loans from supporters to lawmakers are more scrutinized because of the possibility that sweetheart deals could influence legislation. Cantwell’s situation raises fewer alarms, he said.

“It sounds unusual. It doesn’t sound concerning,” Ritsch said.

He bribed her with negative money. Will the left stop at nothing?

I'm jealous. You were referred to as a "militant homosexual" and a "purveyor of filth" in the comments of the link to your NYT column. Thank you for being willing to be a target. I hope more of us get the chance to join you at the whipping post, Dan. We all need to raise our voices.

Foley is out of his mind (apparently) and I am holding my breath waiting for him to come out of the closet. He might as well do it now. That would frost the cake for the Republicans. They can blame it all on homos.

Whatever political gain the Democrats capitalize on (as they try to keep it respectfully quiet), I fear the backlash (figuratively or literally) this will unleash on those of us that are out. Assuming he does consider himself a homosexual, he chose to keep it quiet to advance his career. What do the people who call Savage a militant homosexual think about guys like Foley?

After his alcohol "rehab" (whatever...) he will start writing the book and then he'll join Jim McGreevy on the tour to promote his memoir.

Their sexcapades are dissimilar, but their opportunism is frighteningly unsurprising and a result of America's sexual cravenness.

Wow. Almost as exciting as me lending my ex-wife money. I've known people, during and after breakups, to lend money to the other person. Heck, I lent $25,000 to a friend once, just because she needed it - and I happened to have it.

Can't recall there was ever any expectations of anyone doing something because of it.

So... um... I suppose Stefan has finally put a nail in the coffin of all those "Maria Cantwell is a lesbian" rumors the Gorton campaign had quietly circulated, huh?

The CWA is an association of cities and water districts in the greater Seattle sprawl. Unless you consider Bellevue and the Woodinville Water District spending a few hundred million dollars on a giant straw from Tacoma to Seattle lefty...I don't.

Cantwell had a boyfriend?

I think the apt title "Senator Slutwell" has a nice ring to it, don't you?
