More News For Republicans To Ignore

Alaskan glaciers melting twice as fast as expected. (Registration required.)

The glaciers of Southeast Alaska are shrinking twice as quickly as scientists had previously estimated, according to a new study.

The findings from Fairbanks and Juneau glaciologists are slated for publication in a leading scientific journal.

During a 52-year period, the Panhandle lost ice in 95 percent of its glacier-covered areas, said Roman Motyka, of Juneau, one of the study’s co-authors.

The scientists participating in the study pinpointed the amount of ice loss by analyzing changes in the elevation of Southeast Alaska’s glaciers between 1948 and 2000.

Their measurements show Southeast Alaska lost an average of roughly 14.6 cubic kilometers of ice per year during that time period.

A cubic kilometer roughly equates to 264 billion gallons of water - about a quarter more than Los Angeles consumes in one year, according to estimates by NASA.

Juneau residents and tourists visit the retreating Mendenhall Glacier daily. Some of the most dramatic ice losses in the Panhandle are underway at lake-terminating glaciers, such as the Mendenhall, fed by the Juneau Icefield, according to the study.

“I just few over the Juneau Icefield three days ago. I was absolutely shocked by how dry and shrunken it looked,” said Nick Jans, a Juneau author, on Tuesday.

Further to the south, the amount of ice loss at Tracy Arm’s South Sawyer Glacier is “not even conceivable,” said Juneau photographer Mark Kelley.

la la la I'm not listening....

It's all the fault of environmental terrorists! They're melting the glaciers in the middle of the night with hair dryers so we'll give them money! Don't listen to them; buy my books!

You think that's bad, Greenland's glaciers are also melting, and if as projected half of them do melt, the amount of non-salt water injected into the Atlantic water flow streams could trigger an east coast/UK/France freeze event.

Remember, global warming is what we call catastrophic global temperature shifts, which is kind of like pumping steroids into the normal oscillations - temps can vary locally as much as 10 degrees F, which means the difference between ice covering NYC and all the rivers like the Thames and Seine freezing over - or the other, which is Scotland becoming known for it's great red wines.

So, stop dilly dallying and make sure your next car (new or used) gets at least 5 mpg better than the last one - if you don't use a car, And replace those incandescent light bulbs with compact flourescent light bulbs - buy them in 4 or 6 packs at Home Depot for really cheap.

Glacier National Park is in danger of losing its namesakes. But the park deparment staff can't talk about that - President Dipshit/Retard/Fetal Alcohol Syndome's Orders.

It's not so great north of Glacier National Park either - my brother drove thru the Rockies on the way to his and my sisters 25th high school reunion in Trail BC, and visited other places like Kaslo BC where we also used to live - many glaciers gone, many sad pitiful remnants of their former majestic selves - we used to play on them as kids.

Face it, it's getting really bad really fast and it's going to accelerate now that China is cranking out cars like crazy.

Thank god the Stranger is so concerned with the environment.

My God you are Hypocrites

let see....

How many trees are used printing a weekly publication, and of course, the Stranger is not printed on recycled paper

Also, as it's a free publication, so there is no way to truly gauge it's actual circulation, so how many copies just go from the printer to the dumpster?

Why are there so many copies printed? In order to attract a dollar per impression cost, the stranger elevates it's press runs in order to charge higher advertising rates.

How much gas is used delivering these issues to news boxes, retail location as well as the dump?

How about gas used by people taking their cars to events advertised in the paper?

How many packs of cigarettes are sold through the advertisements?

And on and on it goes....

Paul in Seattle, it's really admirable of you to get so passionately involved in this issue. Future generations will thank you.

Excuse me, I'm getting a little choked up right now...

PIS - you're reading it online, dumas.

So, climatalogical models were wrong. Authors and photographers are "absolutely shocked" about the environment. Sounds like a typical global warming panic-fest.

BC: Sounds like a typical global warming panic-fest.

I guess the only rational panic-fests are those over WMDs in Iraq.
