Kos Says He Regrets That “Bitch” Remark… Sort Of

Posted by on June 15 at 11:00 AM

On Saturday, down in Las Vegas, I Slogged about an interview I had with Markos Moulitsas, the founder of Daily Kos. During the interview Moulitsas went off on Maureen Dowd and her recent column about him, saying:

Maureen Dowd is an insecure, catty bitch.

That remark (quite catty in its own right) made its way around the blogosphere, landing in Slate on Monday and yesterday prompting this semi-retraction from Kos himself:

…And then there’s Dowd, whose snarky piece wasn’t just par for the course with her, but wasn’t really that bad all things considered. I snapped about it somewhere else and I sort of regret one of the three words I used. The other two I don’t — insecure and catty.

Thus ends the Kos-Dowd catfight, for now. Meanwhile, in the same post, Kos also recommends reading this article by a man whose writing (and lips) generated quite a bit of Slog discussion over the weekend, Ari Melber.

Markos is correct: Maureen Dowd IS an insecure, catty bitch. And so, of course, is Markos.

Moulitsas hits the nail on the head when he describes Dowd's columns as "snarky". As for the other three adjectives, they certainly ring true.

Markos is getting too big for his britches. Sorry, Kos, you are NOT in Dowd's league yet, or even near it. You're just riding a fad.

People overuse tact. They're too paranoid. It's not like he's wrong, thus he shouldn't need to retract his remarks. What, is the blog police gonna come get him?

At least Kos served.

There's no question that Maureen is insecure and catty. Come on.

She also has a raging hard on for Bill Clinton and is jealous as hell of Senator Clinton and of Monica Lewinsky. I mean, just look at how long it took her to stop fixating on Clinton's sexcapades and focus on Bush. And evn now, if Clinton comes within 50 miles of her, her focus swings right back to him, his wife, his life.

Jealous of phat Monica. Amazing.

Did Maureen ever snark on Juanita Broaddrick? Did she ever defend the sisterhood (as she did with Anita Hill ... no woman would ever lie about sexual harassment!) and declaim that no woman would ever lie about rape?

"Tact is saying stuff that's just not true."

I am afraid that one thing Markos lacks -- and Dowd possess in spades -- is a sophisticated sense of humor. If she is "catty," she is also self-depreciating. Let's face it, Dowd is just about the hottest single 50-something woman in the nation and Kos is a lumpy, bug-eyed dweeb.

Having said that, I must admit that I love Daily Kos and greatly admire what the guy has done.

Ari Melber's take on the blog conference is really interesting - and it's clear why kos liked it, QUOTING MELBER:

Yet many of the online activists are new insiders who got noticed more for ideas and attitude than for their political connections. The top bloggers also have an ongoing dialogue with thousands of people, providing an instant, public reality check through online comments. (Typical political insiders do not face such accountability once they enter pundit orbit.) As Salon's Peter Daou emphasized this weekend, bloggers can cross-pollinate with mainstream media without being co-opted, because "the blogosphere is a new power base, a stand-alone entity with its own ethos." Most important, this open, interactive structure may be a model for profound societal changes beyond Democratic politics....
