Was Sugar Sweet?

Posted by on May 6 at 9:38 AM

Anyone make it to the opening of Seattle’s newest fag bar last night? How was it? Any early reports?

too gay

Too gay --- how is that possible?

Does the term "gay bar" ring any bells in 2006 Seattle?

Of course, I guess gays get to say too breeder.

The gayer the better as far as I'm concerned. RPlace is being invaded by straight people, so hopefully Sugar will be the new place to pick up strangers for anonymous sex on the streets of Capitol Hill.

Next time it will be darker.
No Seizures.
We promise.

i was dj'ing at the bus stop last night and sugar was the talk of the hill. plenty of hot homos stopping in for a drink beforehand and a few returning after to report a fun and lively scene. the place apparently looks and sounds great.

it would behoove all fags and non-fags to pop into the bus stop for a pre-func cocktail. fri & sat nights feature a sweet, heavy-handed bartender and charming hospitality from mark mitchell. i think they always have djs (my gig was a one-off, filling in for the stranger's own kurt b. reighley) and there is never a cover.

last night included visits from your man josh feit (it's a fight for air time with the two of us talking each other's faces off), my boys from band of horses, and war room impresario marcus lalario. good times at that little den of sin.

Hey, they painted Spintron white. Bold! And who doesn't like a forced line at the door and ten bucks cover charge for more of the same with a fresh coat of paint.

Spintron? Don't you mean the Easy?

I stopped by on Thursday night. Lively crowd, good music, friendly staff.

Had never been in the space before - I like the current set-up and layout. It is kind of funny how "white walls" seems to be the best Seattle can come up with for "new." But don't look down, because the carpet they've installed is straight outta 1980s Sea-Tac.

I have my fingers crossed for their Sunday afternoon T-dance. I really miss the (original) Timberline; not sure if this place can fill that particular void, but it's a cool new addition to the same old same old.

And I concur with Kerri on the Bus Stop!

There was an impenetrable wall of smokers on the sidewalk outside Sugar last night. Lord I knows I tried to penetrate, but to no avail.

Just came back from Sugar (Saturday night). I love what they did to the place, but it's bullshit. WAY TOO MANY WOMEN. If I wanted drinks spilled on me, to be shoved, stepped on, hair flipped in my face, I would go to Neighbours. And the music was BULLSHIT - I've never in my long clubbin' life paid such money to hear such CRAP. Take your Comeback and Hot Mess crap elsewhere... Can we not have a FUCKIN GAY NIGHT WITH DECENT MUSIC IN THIS CITY? On the way out several people asked "How is it in there". I said "I'm movin' to San Francisco". They all looked at me in horror, got out of line, and went straight home to make plans to move.

Unfortunately the 20+ security team can't keep girlz out... music SUCKED, girlz were everywhere, and the whole vibe was lame. I give this place a month before it turns into a straight club.

Not as faggy as it was 'laggy'

Interior looks good, not much energy for some reason. Definitely didn't like the dj. Didn't feel gay so much as your typical mixed Capitol Hill crowd. Still had plumbing problems on Saturday night; we left and actually went to Neighbours. They should have gone with Fagbar.

Its about time capital hill had a new night club. for all the fags who don't like girls in thier club get over it. I'm a fag and love bringing my girlfriends with me to gay clubs. Shame on fags who are don't like girls in a gay club get over it and know its a new generation. I had such a great time with my friends and thought it was the coolest and sweetest club ever. Thank you Seattle for a new space to meet other hot guys. The interior was clean and sweet. If you know your music I thought the DJ's on friday played some great house music. I'm a house queen and loved the music. I loved it so much I dragged a hot crew of fags and females back to saturday and thought the DJ's set was great and loved it. Thank you for a new sweet space to hang out instead of the tired old closed minded used whores that go to neighbors and r place fuck them I'm a new regular at SUGAR!!!

I went into Sugar on Saturday afternoon just to check the place out. Some guy was doing a Karaoke soundcheck to Turning Japanese.

The place looked like a fusion of Neighbours and Manray; without the ghetto glamor or chatty charm.

Perhaps because it was 5pm and nobody was there, but the place didn't inspire gaiety. The environment was stark, with lots white surfaces and hard lines. There was no place to hide. No matter where I went, I felt like a ballon tacked to a carnival game waiting to be popped by a flying dart.

My experience in Gayland tells me the place's design lends itself to standing around, looking at people from across the room, but not talking to anyone.

How's that song go? Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a cyclone ranger
.

And that's gay culture, sure. But, like an airport's food court, Sugar just seems too sterile to be fun.

i went on thursday. it reminded me of a dancehall version of Manray but with some cute punky lesbians peppered throughout. i don't remember seeing any straight girls. if they were there, they were glued to their gay boyfriends.

Sugar... ahh honey honey, this could be everyones candy.. This new spot is a sure thing alot can be done with this place... a new spot something fresh and possibly something really different.... i see a stage, i see many stages with dancers hot ones at that... everyone i encounterd was different and happy.. I see unity, i dont think this place should be labeld as a gay bar.. its for everyone... and people were having fun dancing and laughing.. fun times had by all... XOXO Sven...

i thought gay applied to girls and boys, not just horny gay boys. and what type of music would you have preferred? generic 40's cuts are what you get at neighbors and r-place, if you want them, go there, if not give up some feedback as well broaden your musical tastes, geez. dont say seattle never did nothin for ya! and ps, opening weekend will always have some bugs to work out, hows the club you opened working out?

I went to SUGAR 3 nights during the 1st week , to see what the different promotors were doing,,, and was glad to have discovered that the once cavelike "easy" has been transformed into a NEW , gorgeous, modern and very NON "BAR" LIKE --- CLUB!

Yes Seattle, a CLUB, for ALL of our drinking, DANCING and flirting pleasures!

Not a BAR, but a CLUB, in a neighborhood full of BARs = with real great DJ's playing more than your average fagbar diva tunes, a very hot and sweet staff , with beautiful customers and a (did I say NEW) environment to enjoy going out to!!!

And it looks like we are LUCKY- they are bringing in amazing local , national , and YES even international DJ's and DRAG superstars.

To the "moving to SF" queen: GOOD RIDDANCE -I'm staying in Seattle , (don't) find me at Sugar!!!!

Saturday was like an episode of "Girls Gone Wild". Music by CB Shaw was barely danceable. We left after a group of straight girls, who had whipped themselves into a drunken frenzy, spilled a drink all over my friend and then laughed like it was the funniest thing they'd seen. We tried again on Sunday and there were ten people in the whole place. Nice digs, though.
