Straw Poll Results (Warning: Totally Unscientific, but Totally Interesting)

Posted by on April 25 at 8:00 AM

Wow. Wonks unite! I think you people set a Slog record yesterday, dropping over 100 votes into the comments section of my straw poll on the six serious candidates who are seeking to be the next state representative from Seattle’s 43rd District. I’ll get to the significance of this totally unscientific, completely subject to manipulation, and wildly early poll in a moment. But first, the results:

Lynne Dodson: 42 votes

Stephanie Pure: 19 votes

Jamie Pedersen: 17 votes

Dick Kelley: 4 votes

Bill Sherman: 4 votes

Jim Street: 4 votes

Andrew Boike (a person who doesn’t seem to be filed in this race and whose name I don’t recognize) : 2 votes

Stan Lippman (who has raised a total of $1,242 … all from himself) : 1 vote

If that doesn’t add up to the total number of “votes” that were cast before midnight — well, like I said, this was a very unscientific poll. Plus, I tabulated the results after a dinner party that included wine and martinis. And, a small number of people appear to have commented but not voted.

So, what does this mean? Well, I’d say that this poll is primarily an indication of how seriously certain candidates in this race are taking online organizing. Clearly, Dodson knows how to a) rally the online troops and/or b) knows how to manipulate an online straw poll.

Will web organizing be important in this race? I’m not sure, but if the MySpace pages of Jim Street and Stephanie Pure are any indication, some of the candidates certainly think so. (UPDATE: Jamie Pedersen has one too.)

Congrats to Lynne. We’ll be checking back in on this race regularly as the campaign season progresses…

Dodson.
What a crock,
Just another clone.

Look what she wrote:

"We need to approach our state’s opportunities and challenges in new ways. We must get away from our “can’t do” timidity and fight for our principles and values. I’m an agent for change. I’ve learned we can create the world — and the state — we want. We need to have the vision to see it, and the leadership, creativity and energy to work for it. I do and I will."

A fucking Republican could have written that. She is a nothing, judging by her own statements.

Jamie Pedersen has a MySpace page as well.

Check it out:

Any candidate without a MySpace page is basically out of touch. Glad to see all three of these candidates have them. I am sure it will start a trend, by the end of the election season I bet all of the candidates running will be up there. Surpriseed that with all her money and tech background Burner hasn't caught onto this yet.

I think it means people need to participate in the Straw Poll at the 43rd District Democrats Candidate Forum to be held at Town Hall. details at www.43rddems.org i think.

The bonus is that the straw poll there will actually be two straw polls - one is a one person in audience one vote poll and the other is a pay a dollar get a vote poll. We'll see who wins at that one.

Um, isn't Lynne Dodson a Green Party member?

Actually, no - Lynne isn't a Green Party member, she's a PCO (and, until, recently, volunteer coordinator) for the 43rd District Democrats. Now, Dick Kelley's Co-Chair Nick Licata was a Green Party member for some time while serving on the City Council, and sent out a letter urging that if either Gore or Bush had a big lead in Washington folks consider voting for Nader; and Stephanie Pure's boss Peter Steinbrueck was a Green Party member for some time while serving on the city Council - and spoke at length at the Ralph Nader rally in 2000; but no, Lynne Dodson isn't a Green Party member. And I'd guess that every one of the candidates has some Green Party members and former Green Party members supporting them. But didn't you mean to phrase that, "Are you now or have you ever been. . ?" Can we drop this crap and look at the candidates and what they'll do if they're elected?

So, if the candidates with MySpace pages lose... will their campaign pages get an entry on MyDeathSpace?

Walrus, what you do mean 'this crap'? It was a random question in one comment. Suspiciously touchy about that, aren't you?

Gomez - Don't know if you were reading the posts last week, but on Friday morning there were more than a dozen posts on this, if you count the several identical posts (under a couple of different names) that one of the other candidates organized. And there were several the day before, as well. "Will" was part of the discussion both days, and the question he raised had already been clearly answered at great length, both by Ms. Dodson and by others. But I like your idea of MyDeathSpace.

I don't know Will, like personally, but he is nothing but a fucking pinko hillside instigator. I think I met him one night after midnight at the old Comet. Half drunk and still drinking good beer - full of piss and vinegar, unshaven blond.

From where ever you are watching, this is going to be one helluva race.

Wait till the last months and they - or their supporters - all go strongly negative.

Not for the faint hearted - we will hear about parking tickets - unpaid child support - voting records - donated money - sexual inuendo - and business failures. Not to mention bad grades in Jr. High and tracks found in skivies.

In all fairness, Lynne Dodson looks really good. And as a field they all surpass the yahoos from most districts. We should export the loosers to other districts - go Dems.

pretty funny how Pederen's friends are almost exactly the same as Street's, Street just has more. Since Street had a MySpace page up before Pedersen, I assume Pedersen's campaign drip just went and asked all of Street's friends to be Pedersen's friend. I guess Jamie doesn't have any of his own friends, poor kid.

Making this comment makes me feel like I am 14
