R.I.P. Proof

Posted by on April 11 at 12:44 PM

A key member of Eminem’s notorious D12 hiphop crew, Proof (AKA 32-year-old Deshaun Holton), was fatally shot in the head during an argument at a strip club on Detroit’s 8 Mile Road, which was immortalized in the Eminem bio-pic 8 Mile. A respected battle rapper, Proof appeared in that film and was Em’s best man in his second marriage to Kim Mathers in January.

Obie Trice, another Motor City MC tight with Eminem, was shot while driving on a metro Detroit freeway in December 2005.

Not sure about the "strip club" part. From what I've read on line, the bar was in a strip mall. FWIW, while that is not the nicest area of town, it isn't the worst either. He was within several blocks of being in one of the wealthier neighborhoods in Detroit. Of course, Detroit is one of those cities where, literally, one side of the street is wealthy and the other side of the street can be a slum.

Sorry. I was projecting--back to my own squandered days living in the Detroit area. Alas, I know 8 Mile all too well...

This is too bad. Proof was an amazing artist and was just beginning his rise as a solo artist. Proof, you'll be sorely missed, but we'll never forget you. R.I.P. Proof.

Ever notice how many ex-Detroiters there are in the Seattle area? A friend of mine who now lives in Southern California used to say to me: "A lot of people are from Michigan, but you rarely meet people moving there."

Sad about Proof. He was a very talented rapper. Too early for him to go and such a tragic way.

off topic, but now am reading "grit noise and revolution," subtitled, the birth of detroit rock n roll.for anyone interested in motor city music roots -
a decent read for in depth factualization...

R.I.P. from the crazy life... at least he lived it.

2 words: Michigan winters.

Yes, Seattle is teeming with ex-Detroiters, and loads of Midwesterners in general. This city makes for a nice, radical change from rustbelt existence.

Thanks to herethere for the book tip.
