Delicate Police Beat in NYT

Posted by on April 28 at 5:17 AM

Manohla Dargis’ review of Police Beat is certainly cooler than the one in the Village Voice but it’s by no means cold. Dargis writes: “It is both Z’s familiarity and his otherworldliness that bring all the bits and odd pieces of this lovely, modestly scaled film together.”

"'Police Beat' features a menagerie of types, who, while only passing through, leave enough of an impression that you can see the beginnings of another film trailing in their wake."

This is the kind of observation that, were I a screenwriter, would make me buzz with joy. Congrats, Charles!

Hey Charles, congratulations on the review. I was able to see Police Beat at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last year and was greatly impressed. Pape Sidy Niang was there for the Q&A and really charmed the crowd. My favorite comment from the audience was that the film didn't exactly make you want to visit Seattle.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaking of the police: At the stroke of 11 last night, I heard about 20 consecutive rifle shots from my porch in North Seattle.

A few police sirens followed, but nothing appeared on the city's 911 Incident Report.

Weirder still: We called 911 numerous times, receiving a busy signal on our land line and cell phone.

When we called the SPD's nonemergency number, the dispatcher answered on the first ring. Before I said a word, she said, "We know about the gunshots. Thanks."

Click.

Did anyone else hear this? Was it merely the SPD testing our vigilence?

fireworks, horatio. chill.
