onIt’s true: Linda Derschang will open a new “neighborhood pub” on Capitol Hill’s 15th Avenue East in the space currently housing Cypress, formerly known as Mango’s, Kozak’s, Hopscotch, Macguire’s, Jake’s, and one more place that no one can remember. Linda’s latest will be called Smith. I hesitate to speculate about her ability to reverse the curse on this space of doom—I have been very wrong about this kind of thing before (R.I.P., Red Line)—but if anyone can do it, Linda can. Lots of remodeling is planned, maybe an exorcism, and a summertime opening for Smith.

That's funny. I wonder how Seattle ranks in the amount of turnover for a city's retail spaces. Keeps Home Depot thriving I suppose.
Oh thank god. When I left the country last fall, Cypress was just getting ready to open and I was sad to see the owner of a Fremont bar coming to 15th and possibily bringing the same kind of asthetic and crowd with them. I've never been to Cypress and so don't know if my fears were realized, but am pleased as punch to see Linda coming in there. Her and her asthetic, I trust.
I played the Terminator pinball game at the place that preceded all of those places that nobody's remembering the name of--something with a number in it? The last dive bar 15th ever saw.
so...the canterbury doesn't qualify as a dive?
I admire the hell out of anyone who will open any business in that spot. You could make a "giving away money" store there and it would fail. Oh, wait....
Anyway, Cypress has good food and booze, the people are friendly, etc., so I'll miss it. But it continues to amaze me that banks will loan money to someone who wants to lease a location and drop that kind of money on remodeling before they even open the doors. PEOPLE!! If you can serve good food and good drinks, try opening a restaurant WITHOUT dropping $100k on all the refurnishing. If you're still in business after a year, take out a loan to make it look nice. Sheesh.
The Canterbury serves food you can eat, more or less. Shouldn't a true dive bar offer nothing more elaborate than pickled eggs?
I wish Linda well in there. But I'll miss Cypress. It was pretty much the only place in that space since Hopscotch that made any sense. And Hopscotch only made sense during the dot.com boom, when people had lots of cash to spend on single malt scotch.
At least Cypress wasn't trying to be son of Coastal Kitchen. It's like people don't get it. There's already a Coastal Kitchen. We don't need another one up there. I've lived by 15th for 15 years now. There isn't room for two Coastal Kitchens.
The stuff that works up there (other than Coastal Kitchen) provides good food options for under $10 and a comfortable environment. That way, when it's 7:30pm on Tuesday night, you are hungry, and looking to grab a quick bite, you think about that space as one of your options and maybe eat there a couple of times a month.
That's what Cypress had become for me. I guess I was in the minority.
In other 15th related stuff, how about a story on the Rainbow Grocery? How much longer is that place going to survive with nothing on its shelves and staff that really don't seem to give a shit about the customers. I had a bad experience there, went to complain to the manager, and then found out that my bad experience had been with the manager. I pity the people who own that place. If that's the kind of employees they have, who needs enemies.
It would really make me sad to see that place go down. But I fear it's going to happen. It's always surprised me that they didn't get more into the prepared food thing like Madison Market and do a deli counter. Seems like that would do really well. I know QFC has a deli counter, but most of the stuff in there is so nasty. So I end up going to Madison Market.

You know that location needs to become something totally different. I mean it is obviously not working for bars or eateries. And a couple baristas at Starbucks next door think the place is possessed. So do I. Did a former restaurant owner kill themselves in the back after not making any money? Someone should look into that.
But the new place I give 12 to 18 months before folding.
yay...i guess...the staff at her bars/restaurants aren't exactly known for their friendly service...
i've eaten at cypress, once...the server was delightful; the food was bland...and the music was illegal; a cd of beck...i refrained from calling ASCAP/BMI though...
i was sooooo sad to see the cypress garage sale this weekend. ironically, i stopped in their friday night two weeks ago and found it was TOO busy for my taste (couldn't even get to the bar!) and went down to 22 doors. i thought, sad to see my new favorite hangout become super popular and loud, but happy it's getting more business. then this! very very sad.
