Obama’s Private World

posted by on November 3 at 8:10 AM

An amazing paragraph in the New York Times:

His world is awash in powerful, conflicting emotions: the realization, presumably, that he may be about to become president; the huge optimism that he has unleashed, evident in the crowds he is drawing (and something he has told aides worries him a bit, given the expectations set for him); the weighty thinking he is gradually giving to how he would staff a government and deal with a transition in such a difficult time. All of this is taking place as a woman who played a large role in raising him, his grandmother, is approaching death.

Accompanied by an amazing photo by Doug Mills:

A famous first lady once said that it was the worse possble time to become President but at least they had finally made it. There were gun turrents on top of the US Capital when he took the oath of office on that cold winter's day. But Eleanor's husband had made it to the White House....

Obama has a bar that has been set for him that seems impossible to meet, but maybe we need to set the bar that high on the off chance that Obama will meet and beat those expectations. Part of hope rests in going beyond what is merely expected and accomplishing the impossible. This is the time for the best and brightest; it is up to Obama to take the sword out of the stone and claim the mantle.

Unfortunately, the Obamas have lost their beloved Toot. We all send our condolences to the family, and know that she will be "watching".
