Obama on the Daily Show. I’ll be watching…

Spoiler here, and Slog’s Obamamercial thread here. Oh, and here’s the other big TV moment of the night: Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, on stage together for the first time, in Florida.

Being in Michigan I've already watched it and I can tell you it was great.

Colbert is fantastic tonight as well (David Simon is the guest.)

David Simon seemed totally flummoxed by Colbert. And, Obama's best Daily Show line by far was about Socialism and Kindergarten. He was good, but I keep wishing he'd be live in the studio...

Glad to see Bill finally show up. Man, he sure looks more and more like Lady Elaine from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

He's brilliant. He's sharper now than he was as president I think. Hopefully we see more of him for the next few days. That sort of speech will work with any audience.
I think his participation is probably genuine at this point, because it's not about Obama now. It's about consensus building and a mandate and all that.

Bill just loves this part of it. He's ready to be the elder statesman. Loves to be asked what he thinks. Can you imagine getting these two lovable wonks in the same room?

Jesus, he is amazing, despite it all. We might just pull this out yet.

Bill is totally inconsequential these days.

great move, not just tactically, though that helps, but did you listen to what they said together?

Thematically, Obama's totally building on Clintonism. He said the change we seek is to restore American Dream (you know exactly what I said a few weeks ago), make the economy work for all of us, again, as in 1880s (no more of that Clinton = Bush line now after the nomination's in the bag, uh huh!) and we are going to grow the economy from the bottom up so everyone shares in teh benefit. (That's the core, let's repeat that about five million times every eyar for forty years, THEN we will have political dominance. MAybe today it does not take as long with the internet.)

Similarly, Obama noted Clinton's focus on opportunity coupled with community and responsibillity (homage to Clinton's framing of it) and said we americans are an independenet people (wow-speaking words Americans love to hear and linking to our deepest self identity) and we don't want a handout we just want govt. to do what we can't do alone. (triple wow....it's just common sense....we need roads r and d etc. etc. govt. has to do it cuz we can't do it alone.....so much better than an intellectual debate about isms....)

Very good, tight, coherent, simple words that communicate what we are about and meet those charges of socialism, hand-out liberalism, etc.

Now that's some framing there.

Unity y'all--
