It's very heavy-handed. When Rove this this shit he handed it out to surrogates and 527s while Dubya looked friendly. Having a croaky red-faced old guy talk in a contemptuous voice about the guy a majority of Americans like is an unattractive sight. And most people don't like Sarah Palin, or at least give much weight to what she says.

Another thing Dubya's people were good at: They weren't trying, at least not as the press was concerned. Their attacks just came from somewhere in the distance, from all around. With McCain you can see the effort on his face, and all the press reports begin with "In an effort to turn around a flagging campaign, John McCain began a series of attacks..."

In short: Won't work.

I hope after Obama shakes McCain's hand tomorrow night-he wipes his hand off

"McCain actually has gay associates about whom he speaks glowingly"

As someone quoted James Carville a little while ago, if your enemy is drowning, throw the son of a bitch an anvil.

Get ready for a ten-ton weight tomorrow night, Sidney.

John McCain asks who Barack Obama is and an audience member cries out, "A terrorist."

And then John McCain's expression turns to some mix of surprise and mild disgust.

I don't doubt that he was a bit disgusted and surprised. But if like Glendower you are calling spirits from the vasty deep, you really shouldn't be surprised when they stop obeying your commands.

The real crime is that Obama and his organization has multiple and tangible connections to the remnants of the Weathermen.

He can't deny it. His mom, in fact, seemed to have programmed him at a young age to carry out their mission.

Hopefully, Barry the Trojan Horse won't slip through the gates...

David Letterman hit it on the head when he said "something smells" about the McCain campaign.

It has the unmistakable odor of desperation, of McCain & his disingenuous generals believing that they can outdo the Porcine Propogandist Himself by spewing ever-more-vile attacks.

Something tells me it isn't working this time.

I think Dave was confused by the odor of the glue that holds down his toupee.

JB, didn't anyone send you the memo?

It's over.

You can pack for your trip to the desert for the next 40 years now.

Pack wisely.

Seems like Democrats are putting on a lot of firepower to help something that's "over".

Al Gore to Seattle?

Gee, an entire party seems a bit nervous.

McCain landslide?

Yup.

I heard Obama went to Berlin because he's a communist! Just like Hitler! And he wants everyone to speak Spanish so that the U.N. can impose a World Government from Cuba! His 'flag pin' is really a Muslim secret camera for reading your mind! And in numerology the letters in his name add up to 143, and if you look in the bible...Bzzt! Pfft! Krrrrrk!

I hate to say this but Palin's starting to really worry/scare me. Her latest stump speech calling Obama a terrorist drives the crowd crazy, in that same way Hitler drove Germans wild and against the Jews. Clearly, Palin is trying to associate that being black = terrorists. Can you imagine if she's VP/POTUS driving people to attack gays, blacks, people of middle east descent, and anyone else she views as not believing in her ideologies?

@19--She's beloved by the Republican base at those rallies. By the rest of America, not so much.

I'm less worried about the campaign effects of this latest set of smears. The effort has been hamhanded, independents and even low information voters are likely to see through this one given the obvious presentation and the timing, and preaching to the people that already are convinced that Obama is a secret Muslim isn't going to have much of an impact.

This does make me a lot more worried about an assassination attempt though. Riling up the people McCain and Palin are riling up is irresponsible in the extreme.

I want Obama to show up to the debate tonight feeling absolutely indignant about all this shit. Is that too much to ask?

From the last link:

Sean Hannity, the conservative radio and television host, was the host of the hourlong program, which raised, among other things, unsubstantiated accusations that Mr. Obama’s work as a community organizer in Chicago was “training for a radical overthrow of the government.” .... Mr. Martin said Mr. Obama’s political career had been engineered by Bill Ayers.

So, now they're getting specific. It's not enough to make vague associations and innuendos, the story is now that Obama is a tool of Ayers, who's been plotting all this time to take over the government.

Awesome.

This thread is kind of boring, somebody needs to step up and say EXACTLY what ironic cutting and absolutely deadly comebacks Obama should use against McCain. I love it when you guys do that. More than just being "indignant about all this shit" let's have some specific jaw dropping lines that will leave McCain gasping for air and his handlers sighing in great sighs of resignation.

Maybe a contest for best Slog commenter suggested Barack Obama debate comeback line. That would so rock.

Re: #16

Maybe someone at The Stranger can pull together a post of John Bailo's greatest hits, and then publish it on Nov. 5.

Because I think that'd be awesome.

@26. I think Obama should insinuate that McCain has a black love child. Would that be ironic enough for you?

@12: Are we REALLY still talking about a domestic group that was active in protesting the Vietnam War and the Establishment 40 years ago when the real threat is al Qaeda? Rather than debating the Chicago political machine, shouldn't we be asking "How the hell is it that we went to the wrong country to fight the terrorists and instead created thousands more people who would really like to put the smack down on American arrogance?"? Or perhaps talking about the state of the global economy which appears to be in rapid meltdown and reordering? Does this whole fucking election really need to be about John McCain's POW PTSD?

@Bob: "John McCain can have the racist vote, I am going to keep working for the American people, for people who aren't going to be fooled by racist attack ads or lies about who I am or what I am going to do. I want to help people, not increase the divide in this country that has seperated us for so long."

OR

"Why does the McCain campaign think it's still 1968? It's 2008 and we have some pretty serious issues, none if which have to do with POW's, racist attacks, or Vietnam. I am running to be president of now, not 30 years ago."

To Dan and All, I have to ask, at what point do you folks have to stop reading all of this stuff? I have to tell you that I get so disgusted by the lies and the hate that come across in these articles. The one regarding Palin in Florida where someone said out loud to kill Obama, I was totally shocked that this woman didn't turn around and have that person removed. At that point I had to stop reading. There's only a certain amount I can put up with everyday. What about the rest of you?
