Politics The Flip Side

onIt’s a small thing, but there’s a funny burn on former transportation secretary Doug MacDonald in the latest pro-transit election flyer. MacDonald (who, for the record, I’ve always enjoyed debating and whom I totally respect) is a HUGE opponent of Initiative 985, the Tim Eyman-backed proposal to open HOV lanes to everyone… and an equally huge opponent of light rail, which he contends is a waste of money compared to buses.
Anyway, here’s the latest anti-985 mailer:
And here it is again—this time, the opposite side.
I may be the biggest transit nerd in Nerdville, but this makes me giggle every time I look at it.

I angrily ranted like a liberal wonk about the Sierra Club owing us a mailer and they produce this work of genius.
Okay, so how much are dues and when are their meetings?
ahem, I am the biggest transit geek in geekville
being born and raised in New York City ... I'd have to say that I'm a bigger transit geek than y'all.

I have yet to see where this burn is, or even why the flyer merits posting on the Slog. And for chrissakes, make the images expandable so I don't need bifocals by the time I'm 30.
The problem with debating Erica so much is getting her to remember exactly what you said!
I'm not a huge opponent of light rail. I'm actually a big supporter of light rail -- to the right places for the right reason. Like to Northgagte (wish that were my Prop. 1 ballot choice!) And I am at the same time -- big intellectual leap here -- a big skeptic about light rail where it probably won't do the job -- or help the people now (like me on the 358) who are desperate for the services that could actually get some people out of their cars! And it is still the fact -- it's never been disputed -- that when all of Sound Transit's most grandiose light rail visions are realized, buses, not light rail, will be the biggest workhorse in transit. So, investing in and strengthening bus service is a big priority.
Oh well, Erica got this right: I-0985 is really a clunker and everybody should vote against it!

Doug MacDonald, Kemper Freeman, Ron Sims, Tim Eyman, Chris Gregoire -- none of us think that Sound Transit deserves tens of billions of dollars for a Phase II bailout for Phase I overspending.
Ron Sims is viscerally opposed.
Doug MacDonald's 3-part series on Crosscut ripping and tearing the guts out of Sound Transit is required reading.
Doug said that he doesn't need to rip into Sound Transit's Prop 1 anymore because it's going down the tubes anyway.
