Still Haven’t Registered? It’s Not Too Late!

posted by on October 6 at 16:49 PM

If you STILL haven’t registered to vote yet—despite the fact that we literally PUT A VOTER REGISTRATION FORM ON THE COVER, walked you through the process of filling out the form, and told you why it matters—well, shame on you. But it’s still not too late! You can register to vote in person at your county auditor’s office. If you live in Seattle, that office is—bizarrely—located in Renton; if you live outside King County, you can find out where your county auditor’s office is here.

To register to vote in the state of Washington, you must be a US citizen; a legal resident of Washington State; at least 18 years old by election day and not currently denied your voting rights by a felony conviction. You do not have declare a political party preference.

Why is it bizarre that King County Elections is in Renton? Is it the fact that Renton is the population center of King County or the fact that the County saves money by locating this facility in somewhere with cheaper rent than Seattle?

How is Renton the population center of the county?

Renton is not the county seat. Seattle is.

Because it straddles the 3 approximately equal sub-regions of the county, North, South, and East.

Not all county offices are located in Seattle, just as not all state offices are located in Olympia. It made sense for the county to situate its elections facility somewhere both cheap and centrally located.

i work for kc elections (though i do NOT speak for the division, department, or county itself by any means) and the reason we were moved to renton is to consolidate what used to be multiple locations into one single building (yes, our elections warehouse is still located in the CD, but that too will be moving and fully consolidated into the one building in renton within the year i think.)

the building in renton was an existing building that was big enough to accomodate us all (plus the hundreds of temp workers who come in ramping up for elections) and was more centrally located (as lorax @5 said) for the entire county.

it's not nearly as nice a commute as downtown was, but it has many other positives than the KC admin building did not.

Fry's is in Renton, and so's Jet City Espresso. And you can visit Jimmi Hendrix's grave on the way back and ask him to come back to play the national anthem for the inauguration.

@2 and @3 for the win.

Renton is convenient only for the people who are upset that we in Seattle decide the countywide and statewide races.
